wondering how tall a tire you can run on the back of a stepside. i have 295 50 15 now and am thinking of going to an 18 or 20 inch wheel after an axle flip. any ideas or suggestions?

are you do a shackle flip or just flopping the axle on top of the spring as is?

are you tubbing the bed or is it stock tubbs?

I ran 32x11.50x15 on a 10" rim with a 3.75 backset with out rubbing with a shackle flip axle flop.

the 276/60/15 and 295/50/15 on a 10" rim 4.5 backset fit with stock tubbs.

if it was tubbed to the frame with a stock truck width axle a 10" rim with 7.5 backset fit a 29x15.5x15 M/T in the fenders.

so a tall/wide 18-20 should fit a tall fatty in the fenders.

as far as tall goes..I have had 34x9.50x15 on a 8" rim with 4" backset on my stepside with a flip flop.. its up in the fender dead center with stock width truck axle.

do they measure those big rims the same as smaller rims for width/backset???

The way scratch does the flip flop as he calls it only nets about 2-3" of drop in the rear. an axle flip alone is 6". Scratch than does the Shackle flip which lifts it back up 4" as this method is used to raise 4was 4" or eliminate the factory blocks.

How tall or how wide? You can go very tall no problem, it's the width you have to watch. But 8" of tread on the grond as tall as 32" should not be a problem if it has the right placement in the wheel well. I have 29" street tires that fit fine (255/70r15).

Both seem to be good choices. The 35 series your considering is close to 28" tall and the 40series is about 29.5" Tall.

18X9.5 wheel with 5.031 in. Backspace. I had a little issue with the inside of the wheel well, but I am running a narrower 8 3/4. it measures 56 3/4" flange to flange. I would think it would be fine on a standard width rear. The inner wheel well issue is now fixed.

I'm running P285/70R-15 tires on 8" rims which are roughly 31" tall. I'm not a low profile tire guy, especially on cars that never came with them. These tires look correct and fill up the wheel well much better. My fronts are 235-75s on 7" rims.

They are the 338.

I would think 295 with a 6" back spacing would work on a stock rear. I am over an inch narrower on each side and have a lot of clearence on the outer fender. As it sat before I tubbed it, I only had a slight rub on the inside on during hard turns. I only tubbed it for future plans. That and I needed a place for my gas cap.

I am a bit confused as to the axle flip netting 6" of drop.

The axle tube is only 3" and with the perch height added would be in the 4" range.

Where do the extra 2 inches come from?

flopping the axle on top of leafs with shackle in stock position would get you 6" drop. IIRC

the shackle flip with axle flop like I do with my trucks will get you 4+ inch drop. giving a lowerd stance and level with the stock front end. depending on # of leafs and arch of spring packs.

Scratch the axle flip is good for 6" but the Shackles flip Lifts the rear 4" so you only have a 2" drop as a result

the extra 2 inches (I don't think it's 2" though) come from the spring pack thickness---you are now putting the axle on top of the spring so you now have the spring pack thickness to account for too.
