I ran some 10.00's in my 408 Duster last year and my combo was running out of steam at about the 1000 ft line. Several issues going on as I was under cammed (550 lift solid), under carbed (750), the heads were only flowing about 270cfm, and I was running pump gas. There is a 4:88 gear in the car now and a 14-32 Micky Thompson slick. This years engine will a roller cam and app 670 lift, 850 alcohol or 1050 dominator, 40 plus more cfm, 2 points higher compression, and either race gas or alcohol. Now for the question aimed for guys running in the 9's NA. Do you think a 4:30 gear would work better with this combo. If and when I go big block in this car I will probably install 4:30's in the dana but would like keep costs down a little right now. What gear are you guys running and if possible what are you shifting at and what is your trap RPM. Only other thing to add is the car weights 2850 and has a powerglide in it.

I run a dana with 4.56 gears and I shift at 6800 and trap at 7200 my slick size is 14X31X15 and my car weight is similar to yours, I do run a 904 behind my 408.
John I don't mean to hijack your post. I was just wondering what width rim you and Bill are running those tires on? Jim

I have to believe 32" tire, a glide, and a 4.30 would be weak down low. How fast do you anticipate? 140? less? How many rpm do want to run it in the traps? My bet is 4.56 Doug

My bet is 4.56 Doug Doug its only trapping at 130mph now but like I said its running out of get up and go. I was only shifting this combo at 6400 and really slowed up even at 6800. I know more cam, more head, and the bigger carb will help but how much I don't know. This car only weighed 2550 when my son was driving it. Between my lard azz, removing the fiberglass doors, alternator, racepak, and a few other goodies we fattened her up some. 140 mph would really make me happy with this combo but I don't see it happening but time will tell. I won't install 4:56 because I really like a 4:30 gear with a big block and its coming sooner or later. If it was a Ford 9 inch I could use my spare 4:30 carrier from the Daytona.

With my 395" and 14 X 31 and a 4.88 I was running a 9.56 with a 1.27 60'... rpm through was 7600... that was on a 12" rim... I wouldnt drop to the 4.30 unless you cant turn the revs.. due to cam

Well I placed my Summit order today for my new wheels and some roller lifter for the new higher compression build and I passed on the 4.30 gears for now. Had a 10% off coupon I had to use up. I know it will still be head and cam limited but back to big blocks soon so no sense in buying a good after market block. Thanks guys for sharing some info.

This example shows how my engine in the Demon is head limited. The cars weigh within 5lbs of each other and mine only went 6.09 at 111mph versus 5.79 at 120 mph, however my 60 ft has been as quick as 1.261 and avg 1.29/1.30 if it don't trip the beams with the rear wheels. 3 speed trans in mine helps the 60ft a lot though.
I watched the video also and nice job munching the chevy.

I have an 8.75 rear and the only pro gear available is the 4.86 so that is what I run with a 14.5/32 tire on a 15" rim, traps about 7200. 2750 with me in it, 4 link rear the car would hook in a mud slide.
