YEP i somehow strip most of the threads on my LD340 intake just 1 out of 4 holes that bolts my carb,i did find a longer bolt that caught some threads and is holding, but who knows how long it will last,so i may as well look into buying a Helicoil kit could someone tell me what size drill bit and coil to get thanks DON.Iam sure someone has been there done that.

Yes you drill first then tap then put in the insert. A Letter Q Drill is 8.5 MM if that helps

Probably won't find a Q bit at the local autoparts HomeDepot or Lowes store. Try a real hardware store or industrial supplier. Or just buy the kit that comes with the bit. Oh and 8.5 MM is less than .003" larger than a Q drill so it should work also. http://www.csgnetwork.com/drillsizeconvert.html

In theory, there is no difference between theory and practice. In practice, there is.

21/64" is .004" smaller and works. I've done it a number of times, especially on a low torque app like a carb mount flange

I prefer studs instead of bolts. There might be some good theads in the bottom that the studs would grab onto.

I always use studs even in a cast iron intake.

I will make a note of that size. Q = 8.5 MM

what are the other 3? H,X,G ? -the chart shows them but I never know what they are and asking for them is a blank.

I keep this chart hanging in my shop. I can get the heli coil kits but rarly find the sales person knows what size bit or where to look.

I will looking for the 6.7 MM drill bit today for a 1/4-28 fine thred repair on the pinion yoke.

on my LD4B intake I did that, I drilled/tapped to next size stud size and got studs that where larger on one end and normal carb stud size on the other.

or you can go to the next size bolt/stud... but you want to check carb flange to see if they will need inlarged.

for a long time on my LD4B the outer carb stud holes were striped and I used the inside holes to bolt the edelbrock carb on and even used a squarebore to spredbore adaptor in the inside holes on intake flange

You can do it even easier. None of this pi$$in& around with bit sizes.

BUY A HELICOIL KIT!

It has everything you need, the helicoils, the drillbit and the tap.

It'll cost you about $50, although I have bought for a lot less on the 'bay.

After you're done, you can buy more loose coils to do more holes.

I would agree...but you get what you can in a one horse town. not all kits come with the drill bit. not all places order kits in...just common sizes for the bulk racks. the pack of inserts are a varity of sizes with other only being in a common size.

I have been to 2 countys looking for the kit with a bit..no kit for a 1/4-28 to be had.. with or with out the drill bit.

so now I am looking around on the bay now. amozon may have something if I get that far into looking.

Any decent parts store ie Carquest NAPA even Partsource if they don't have them in stock, can order the kit in.

Where are you located?
