Hello all, I have been looking around for a 360 to build when I was offered this short block by an aquintence from the mopar world.
I thought that I'd run the specs by you for some feed back.
My first thoughts are that it's a bit too much for a fun street car I am planning.

360 block bored 0.040 = 4.040 = 367 cid
block tubed for roller cam
oil passages drilled
6.123 new connecting rods (6 pac)
new 3/8 connecting ARP rod bolts
TRW pistons 0.160 dome = 12.5 compression with 64cc heads
double roller chain and gear
Crane cams roller 232-242 dur at .050 lift 296-306 adv dur
0.500 lift with 1.5 rockers
roller lifters
all TRW bearings crank .010 rods and mains
bronze oil pump drive and bushings
melodeon oil pump.

I have just copied the info word for word from seller.

Any thoughts on this with a set of Edelbrock heads?
Thanks.

If it were me I would look elsewhere. Why have to run race fuel because of dome pistons that are part of a pretty much tame bottom end with stock crank and heavy rods.
If I was gonna run that much compression I would utilize better and lighter parts and certainly a bigger roller cam. In other words make serious steam.
Kinda like a go cart at those rental tracks that they turn the governor screw in on.

With edelbroc heads you are looking 475HP.

I can not really say sense we do not know the price. A larger cam and lighter piston would help but, then you need better rods. It goes on and on. How fast you wanna go how much money you got to get there.

I would keep on looking. Its a roller cam but a real small one. I prefer aftermarket H beem rods with 7/16 rod bolts and you may have issues with a domed piston and edelbrock heads. Flat-top pistons and pump gas works out pretty nice.

" 6.123 new connecting rods (6 pac) "

Huh ?
Little tells like this usually steer me away from a deal.
I'd be leery of six pack road on a big block build because they weigh so much.
On a small block deal , they would be too rare to risk running........I've never heard of a small block six pack rod.

Assume that it's a pile of parts to be disassembled, inspected, selectively reused and then price accordingly. Or walk away.

It's a "Sum of the (used) parts" kinda deal.

I would say, if it's cheap and you are buying it for that reason go for it. It would probably run good, but would require race fuel. And I would get it for a price that you wouldn't cry if it blows up. This engine may have already taken a good beating, as it probably loved 7k rpm.

It would have to be cheap. It would be pretty easy to duplicate and improve on for not much money.

I'm baffled by all the guys saying to pass. They most know the OP and what he is wanting to do. And evidently his budget.

There are so many guys that are just looking for something better but never get there. Why because someone talks them out of it. There is a lot of fun to be had with something like this if the price is right.

I actually know someone who would love to have this exact short block if the price is right. We just don't know what the price is or where it is advertised.

Not everyone can shell out $10,000 in parts for better stuff and then penny up to put it together with all the cost of small parts.

I have a similar piece for sale. Little different. Larger cam, no tube, really nice light pistons, and a race only prepared block 3/4 full of filler and a max ported set of J heads. I have not advertised it for reasons that come to mind reading this thread. I have almost given this thing away several times to have the buyer talked out of it by larger budget minded people. The buyers eventually gave up and figured this stuff out of their financial reach and quit on their project.

thats a heavy rotating assembly(rods/piston) on a cast crank(360 cranks are cast)so a long life with any kind of rpm's will not happen. and that size roller cam would seem more maintenance than its worth.
imo this is a $1500 shortblock... anymore i would pass

Being that you want a STREET engine I wouldnt buy it
with 12.5 compression... its defiantly not a race engine
either with those parts.... unless he is damn near
giving it away and you could buy a set of pistons

Ran the same heavy trw pistons stock rod combo for 5 yrs bracket racing..running 7000 rpm, and then one night a stock rod snapped...

Dont think the eddy heads are going to fit with those trw dome pistons.

Exactly.... Why suffer dealing with 12.5 compression unless your intent is to make serious steam. The cam is real small for a serious performance build, and the bottom end utilizes stock/ heavy parts.
Just not a very well thought out piece, in my opinion. And opinions seem to be what the OP was seeking.
Why not build a shortblock that is pump gas friendly if just looking for a fun street mill.
And on the other hand, if going high compression, use a light spinning assy, and something other than that dinky roller which even still will require pretty decent valve train gear.
Just looks like poorly matched parts to me.

If the price is within his budget and he can hear the motor run and check simple things out on it why not pick it up. Run it as is now and then later if he decides to get more serious swap out the rods/pistons and change the heads. 12.5-1 may be alittle high for the street but sometimes you have to compromise things for something that will fit into your budget, I know I do.

I bought a 75 Nova drag car one time to bracket race, first thing all my friends wanted to do was tear the motor and trans down and go through it and add new parts and better heads and better etc. etc. They had me almost convinced that there was no way it would work as is. Motor ran fine, trans shifted perfect and it was an ok ride for my money. not everyone has deep pockets

Would I run a set of TRW's in a new build? NO, I can afford to come up with a lighter better piston.

Would I run stock rods with bolts? Not with this application but, I have.

Would I run this baby camshaft and deal with it? Probably would have picked something else.

Would I run a 360 cast crank? Absolutely ran one on a 580 horse W2 with 175 NOS for years. The block failed not the crank.

Someone threw out a $1,500 price tag. A cam lifters and block are worth that. Problem is I would personally want more camshaft at that is $300.

Here it is.... If you can scoop it up for $1,000 or less it is a deal. You can't get the block work done for that. Buy a light set of pistons, regrind the cam or buy one, and pick a top end. A worked set of cast irons would do fine but aluminum edelbrocs are lighter and easier to fix.

It all depends on your budget. Less than $4,000 you could have a decent piece. Or buy better stuff and spend well over $6000.

If you can get it cheap I would toss some pocket ported j heads have them valve notched to the gasket. Then use the thicker .055 felpro or even thicker mls gaskets to get it in the 10.5 range. Not sure what the domes look like in these sb pistons... Will it have a quench ???

Its a Short block, he cant hear it run, and the TRW domes may not work with his Eddy heads. Plus he wants a street motor. 12 .5 comp is not pump gas friendly, this really wouldnt make for a nice street motor, even if his heads would work out.

I say pass too. It just doesnt fit, unless he gets it for a steal. Then he could redo it to fit his needs. Id just look elsewhere for now.

not a lot of usable parts for his build, would have to be dirt cheap
