440-1 heads are going to push a stock block pretty hard. I preach using a center weighted crank after seeing the results in my mega block, and in your case, It would help block life a lot. Go as light as you can on piston and rod weight, 7.10 rods with 2.20 rod journals, or smaller if the crank is a real stout piece. I have run 2.1 rods, was told by Crower they would be strong enough with their crank for my app. See if piston and ring makers think using .043 rings top and second with standard oil rings will work. The .043 setup is worth a lot of friction reduction, and makes great power if oil control is good. I run a vacuum pump and alky with mine, so I am not sure about a pump gas deal. The cam is pretty much up to what you want for torque range. David Vizzards book "HOW TO BUILD HORSEPOWER" has a great section on cam selection, and points to a farely narrow LSA for your app, (108 or less, depending on a lot of things) based on valve size and cubes. The book is a good read. Porting those heads is going to be worth a lot. How high are you willing to rev this motor, and the lowest point you are willing to get decent torque?

4000 is where I'd like the TQ to come in... take it to 6200-6500 RPM... I'm gonna get the -1's CNC ported ..2.19 vales..looking around 2200 on the bob weight.. I'm not chasing low numbers... 9.50's would be great... but 10.40's would work too... I just want a low maint ....fun car to run. Plus my boy is now 15 so he'll be in it soon if we don't build his altered/FC soon...

Been a while since I've asked a question or needed input on here. I have a set of -1's... a 1971 block that will go 55 over (already 30 over).A 1050 Dom ...Indy intake with 2" 4150/4500 adapter..... Mainly looking for cam input ...and any tricks to make it more durable. Ready to get started soon...THANKS !!!
Pump gas? Roller or FT cam? Desired HP level?
....glad you chimed in... My boys GF lives in Temecula... we've been running at Barona with his junior... I'm gonna need your input and most likely some machine work... but a buddy keeps trying to get to take it to Rettig Bros....I'm not sold on them though. Lets say FT to keep the cost down....and yes...pump gas...650 ish on the HP Thanks
Rettigs?? NOOOOOOO! UNLESS Wann is doing the work himself. Want a really good central valley shop? Valley Balancing in Ceres.

If your goals are moderate, (600 hp,6,000 max rpm) you can skip the porting other than bowl work, run a cam with moderate duration (270 @ .050 or less) shift it at 5600 to 5800 and run high nines all day long if the weight is down to 3,000 or less. A 543 cube motor with a big hydraulic cam would work great here, very low maintenance. I had a 475 cube rb with this basic combo, 6,000 rpm shifts, ran 10.10 at 3180.
