The reman starter on my 78 Fury sounds like a slant six starter. Every V8 from 1975 and up has a different sound than the 74-older. The older ones seem to crank slower and have more of a slant six sound to them. It drives me crazy. I dont want to put a mini starter on it. I want it to sound right. It bugs me that much! Can anyone explain this?

I put a mini starter on my car and it sounds different. It claims to have more torque and spin faster.

I have many mini starters. I refuse to use them simply because of the sound. They sound like a newer Chevy or import

True, but they are really more efficient. I actually hardly hear my starter, maybe a full second when starting up. Lights up quick

I'll help the best I can. I work with motors quite a
bit. So it's all based on the number of "poles" in the magnetic field that drive the motor. More number of poles faster motor turns. Now all that said, it can also depend on current, strength of the stator, rotor clearance etc.

I would check a couple
of things to make sure your contacts are good. First look at the large threaded copper stud where
the batter cable goes. Make sure it's not worn down
or corroded. Rebuild houses are great for reusing
suspect parts to save a buck.

also, right around that time period, they went to a different number tooth pinion that turns your armature over. I've rebuilt quite a few MOPAR starteres in my day, and the older and later have some non-interchangeable pieces. the older ones also have a heavy wire inside the starter soldered, and the later ones have a little bolt connection. this heavy wire almost looks like a tiny cable.
I hope this helps.

It's the older gear reduction starters that had that MoPar sound.

I thought slant to Hemi was the same starter?

I love the sound of the older starters too. But I also find some sound different than others. I have a slant starter (has a shorter body I think?) on a 10:1 360 that spins much faster than the one on my '67 440.

I actually removed a starter from truck I had to use in my 'Cuda because it had that perfect old Chrysler sound. It was a reman, but the housing was an older casting. I agree sometime around '74-'75 they changed sound. I like the older ta ta ta sound personally just because it is right for the car.

Oh yeah, I know the '75 and up were rated at a higher HP. Probably whatever changes were made to achieve that changed the sound....

Beginning in 75,360 and up got the 1.8hp starter,/6 and 318 still used the 1.5hp starter.

I like the mini starter because it doesn't take 2 hours to put in like the huge original one.

The tinny "slant six" starter sound is made by the light duty 1.5 horsepower starter whereas the V8 sound is from the HD 1.8 horsepower unit.
They sound different because they`re different internally with a much different reduction ratio, bigger, faster motor, shock cushioned drive pinion and a pinion brake that stops the pinion from rattling on after the engine starts.

Wow, thanks chums! I now know what to look for when I go to buy a new starter. I need the "HD" unit with a longer case. I appreciate all the replies

I'm with you. Especially on an A body with headers.
Also, with the higher compression I am running, the
engine turns over MUCH faster, I don't have heat
soak problems, and it's half the weight. I can live
with the sound. Funny how guys don't like the starter sound but will hack their exhaust. I've met
a few of those.

Funny...I dont have to hack the exhaust on my Barracuda to use either the big starter or the mini. Small block, headers, and a 4-speed...cluttered with clutch linkage! Have a nice day!

Koak is right. In 1975 Chrysler went to a higher horse power starter on all 8 cyl engines 360 cid and higher. The starter was 3/4 inch longer than the regular starter. Back in 75 while working for Chrysler, I let`s say got my hands on a brand new one out of a 75 Imperial and installed it in my 70 RR. The reason it sticks out in my mind is that I had to heat up any bend my header to accept the 3/4 inch longer starter.
