I am preparing my 1968 Plymouth Fury wagon to flat tow my 1964 440 to the track next year. My to do list includes converting to front disc brakes, bringing the cooling system up to snuff, front suspension rebuild, etc..

What would good front end alignment specs be for my wagon? Does flat towing a car change what those specs would be? Should I buy the eccentric UCA bushing?

Also what should I do to the transmission? Other than a bigger cooler.

Any other tips for me?

Thanks

For the alignment, I don't think anything special is needed. Factory specs would be fine. A little bit extra camber (negative .25 deg) and caster (positive 1 degree) might help it drive a little better and shouldn't cause wear problems with radials. Do you have a recent alignment for reference? I would only do the offsets if the current ones are shot and need replaced anyhow. The 727 should be fine with a good cooler.

Besides making sure the chassis and powertrain are in good basic shape I would focus on getting a good hitch install for heavy towing... a bit tricky with the unibody I believe.

You probably already know that towing that much weight without trailer brakes may not be considered safe even though it was done "back in the day". An alternative to consider would be a car dolly with brakes. These are available at reasonable cost and wouldn't add much to overall weight.

I'm assuming you are removing the driveshaft out of the 64 440 being towed

Could he use one of the braking systems I see being sold for cars being towed behind RVs?

I understand the braking problems which may occur with this style towing. On the plus side for me is the track is close, about 60 miles and I am going to be taking my time and using the road less traveled.

I am running a four speed so I will not have to disconnect the drive shaft.

Thanks guys
