I'm having a serious problem here. My son has been driving the car this season and has told me the car is "loose" in the shut down. I told him, "race cars are loose up there because of the slicks". I drove it this weekend and it liked to scared me to death. The rear of the car is rocking back and forth like the rear is trying to come around. Kinda like a dog wagging its tail. Its a 76 Volare w/ sb motor. Ladder bar coilover rear, hoosier light weight radial slicks with hoosier front runners. I did move the front toe "in" a little and my son said it helped a little but when I made a hit in it, I almost started screaming cause it got so loose with me. Is it the light weight radials? Rear coilovers going bad? I did just put a set of Calvert front shocks on it. Could the front be too soft? Somebody help me before me someone else gets hurt..lol
76' Volare, 5.9 magnum w/Iron heads. New best 10.68 at 123 mph 1/4 mile.

How much tire pressure are you running? You likely have the tire pressure to low.

What tires are you running? What kind of track locator are you using on the car? diagnal or wish bone and does it have rod ends, urethane bushings, solid rod ends?

do you by chance have a picture of the ladder bar set up on your car? Sounds kinda like the rear suspension may be moving side to side like the locating device is loose or something may be failing. Has it done this all year or been getting worse?

I drove it early this season and it didn't do all that. It had the regular radial slicks on it tho. It also didn't have the calverts on the front end either. I checked the locater bar and the ladder bars, rocked the car side to side and watched the rear susp for movement, nothing...
I should really park it for the rest of the season and completely rebuild the front susp and go thru it with a fine tooth comb but we have 2 races left and my son is sitting close to the top in points and could actually take track champion on his rookie year. I hate to have to take that from him because of a simple adjustment to the car...

Does he need to counter-steer or does the back just wiggle? What sort of ET/MPH we talking here? What size wheel and tire package in the back?
Well, art is art, isn't it? Still, on the other hand, water is water! And east is east and west is west and if you take cranberries and stew them like applesauce they taste much more like prunes than rhubarb does. Now, uh... Now you tell me what you know.

Are you sure it is in the back of the car you are actually feeling it? Not control arm bushings or alignment that is bad. If it wasn't doing it at the begining of the year and it is now then something is wearing down or broken. I would jack the car up and unload the rear suspension and recheck the diagonal and rod ends on the ladder bars. Also is the diagonal held on by bolt in mounts that attach to the brackets or are they weld on mounts? If they are the bent bolt on type they may be shifting down track creating this problem.

A radial willy typically have a stiffer sidewall than a bias drag slick so you should have less rock from the sidewalls with the tire you are running. you should also pull the bolts out on the locator and the front mounts to make sure that the bolt has been eating away at the brackets because the bolt is to short. If the hole is oblonged then that will cause exactly what you have going on. The "kit" ladder bar and 4 link systems typically have too short of bolts in them. The shoulder of the bolt should go all the way through both sides of the bracket and use washers to keep the nut from bottoming out on the bolt before everything is tight.
