Just take a look at this website to see how a nicely restored unit looks. Mind you, these are painted to look like raw fiberglass. Thats how they were originally, raw dark grey fiberglass. https://www.facebook.com/#!/AIRGRABBERRESTORATION

There was no color applied to the underhood boxes , they were molded in black , or orange for 70 Dodges , the color of the material is used is the color they ended up being. [/quote)
They most certainly were not black. They were dark grey as i stated in my first post. Take a look at any survivor 69 dodge or Plymouth.

I never said they were painted from the factory. I supplied the link to show off a restored unit that is painted.

Then technically it's NOT restored if it is painted ????

Painting it anything would be incorrect. The color of the original material is "blackish" IMO. It gets "greyer" as it fades. It's similar material to a heater box IIRC. I'm having the same problem with my orange box, it's very hard to restore and each pce has aged differently. I could paint it, but that would be wrong and I don't wanna. The crappy repop I bought is painted fiberglass and was lacking detail and was 3x thicker than stock....looked like azz. I have a "black" ramcharger box in my stash too. Dave

Wasn't there a post on here at one time that said to apply some type of oil to the fiberglass that did a good job of restoring the color?
Yes, a member did a decent job on one for his '70 Bee and I think he used Lemon Pledge...

I think it's fair to say that there's "restored", and there's "correctly restored". It's very hard to restore the '69 AG composite parts to correct original appearance. Mine (2 of them) were a very dark grey - in low light they could certainly appear to be black - but random strands of fiberglass mat were visible if you looked closely. I can understand someone repairing his and then painting it black, but yes, strictly speaking that would not be correct.
Yes, and I don't think there is any way to CORRECTLY restore one that has been subjected to engine heat for 40 years.

Incorrect, they are not made of fiberglass. They were made from a mixture of resins & plastics materials which were either RIM molded or Compression Molded. Reaction injection molding uses a mixture of heat and chemically reactive plastics (like a two part epoxy that becomes a new material after mixing) and binders like talc and glass fibers which are injected as liquids & small solids into an injection mold under heat and pressure. Compression Molding is a process where a lump of similar plastic and binder materials is literally smashed into shape in a huge mold under tons of pressure.
These materials will withstand more heat than typical thermo plastics will. A number of Mopar parts or the era were made of this same stuff, heater boxes, under hood ducts, some hood scoops, etc. most of which were subjected to heat and needed to hold up. So, while fiberglass or other plastic repair products will work to repair it, pretty much nothing will make an invisible repair because nothing is exactly the same product. These parts were molded in color (black, orange, etc.) but the color varied throughout the parts due to the various materials an solids molded into them. Due to this no paint will be correct, or match the look of natural plastic. That said www.restorick.com has done a nice job of restoring some of these parts by painting them in a similar dark color and going over the part decorating them with brush marks etc. to add back the appearance of other trace colors throughout the surfaces.
