Just take a look at this website to see how a nicely restored unit looks.

Mind you, these are painted to look like raw fiberglass. Thats how they were originally, raw dark grey fiberglass.

There was no color applied to the underhood boxes , they were molded in black , or orange for 70 Dodges , the color of the material is used is the color they ended up being.

They most certainly were not black. They were dark grey as i stated in my first post. Take a look at any survivor 69 dodge or Plymouth.

I never said they were painted from the factory. I supplied the link to show off a restored unit that is painted.

Then technically it's NOT restored if it is painted ????

I think it's fair to say that there's "restored", and there's "correctly restored". It's very hard to restore the '69 AG composite parts to correct original appearance.
Mine (2 of them) were a very dark grey - in low light they could certainly appear to be black - but random strands of fiberglass mat were visible if you looked closely.
I can understand someone repairing his and then painting it black, but yes, strictly speaking that would not be correct.

Wasn't there a post on here at one time that said to apply some type of oil to the fiberglass that did a good job of restoring the color?

Painting it anything would be incorrect. The color of the original material is "blackish" IMO. It gets "greyer" as it fades. It's similar material to a heater box IIRC.

I'm having the same problem with my orange box, it's very hard to restore and each pce has aged differently. I could paint it, but that would be wrong and I don't wanna. The crappy repop I bought is painted fiberglass and was lacking detail and was 3x thicker than stock....looked like azz. I have a "black" ramcharger box in my stash too.

Yes, a member did a decent job on one for his '70 Bee and I think he used Lemon Pledge...

Yes, and I don't think there is any way to CORRECTLY restore one that has been subjected to engine heat for 40 years.

Incorrect, they are not made of fiberglass. They were made from a mixture of resins & plastics materials which were either RIM molded or Compression Molded. Reaction injection molding uses a mixture of heat and chemically reactive plastics (like a two part epoxy that becomes a new material after mixing) and binders like talc and glass fibers which are injected as liquids & small solids into an injection mold under heat and pressure. Compression Molding is a process where a lump of similar plastic and binder materials is literally smashed into shape in a huge mold under tons of pressure.

These materials will withstand more heat than typical thermo plastics will. A number of Mopar parts or the era were made of this same stuff, heater boxes, under hood ducts, some hood scoops, etc. most of which were subjected to heat and needed to hold up. So, while fiberglass or other plastic repair products will work to repair it, pretty much nothing will make an invisible repair because nothing is exactly the same product. These parts were molded in color (black, orange, etc.) but the color varied throughout the parts due to the various materials an solids molded into them. Due to this no paint will be correct, or match the look of natural plastic. That said www.restorick.com has done a nice job of restoring some of these parts by painting them in a similar dark color and going over the part decorating them with brush marks etc. to add back the appearance of other trace colors throughout the surfaces.

I think the reason for the fiberglass reference - by myself & others - is due to the appearance. In the past I worked with fiberglass - hand-laid & chopper gun - and what was called "pre-preg", which was basically a fiberglass cloth pre-impregnated with resin, drawn over a heated 2-piece dye and formed. (Actually, they were GM locomotive gearcases.) The color & appearance of the AG units bears a pretty close resemblance to those, but more like random strands than cloth, and with much more resin percentage.

The box in my very early 69 was originally painted orange-I say painted because the metal clips that held the rubber seal had orange paint on them- and that was original factory work, not something done by the prior owner. By the way, there are no rivets attaching it to the hood, only screws.

That was probably done in the back room at the dealership. No Road Runners in '69 had Orange boxes and all had rivet's holding them on with screws along the sides by the vents.

I restored mine. When I bought the car it was in the trunk and was broken into several pieces and missing some small chunks but it was the original and a Hemi unit. So a lot of repairs were done and it had to be painted. Sure, it doesn't look perfect but I would say it looks very good.

I disagree. I have a Plymouth brochure that shows an orange box in one car. This is a Hemi car and it came with an air box. I bought the car in January 1970 and am sure it was unmolested. The car VIN shows a production number 000013 and the tag has a production date of 8-28, so it is possibly the first Hemi Roadrunner made, so who knows for sure what they put in it?

I disagree. I have a Plymouth brochure that shows an orange box in a white car. Also,

There were plenty of sale brochures printed that show things Chrysler never did on the assembly line. Sometimes the sales brochure would show what was planned but never actually produced. There are some '67 GTX brochures showing a Blue Air Cleaner on a 440 car but they never made them that way, they were all Black. They also produced a 71 Challenger T/A brochure but never built the car.
I would like to see your brochure, can you post a copy?

UNfortunately I am now in a rehab clinic after suffering a small stroke last month. The brochure I have is large - maybe 10 x 14 - and has on the cover the same dark red roadrunner that is on the common smaller brochure. Obviously it has more pictures. I will post a photo ASAP, but it might take sometIme

The GTX is the 69 brochure is A4 silver with the orange air grabber. If you look really close, it also has a flat black latch tray in the engine bay. Pre production car, dont base details on your car from that picture ulesss you own THAT car.

Just like the 1970 Superbee pics showing a red stripe in the grill. This has led many people to duplicate but it's incorrect. Sorry, but unless you bought the car new, it can't be proven and it's extremely unlikely. Not saying it 100% couldn't have happened, just that it most likely didn't and who knows what happened to the car in the first two years of it's life.

828 would be weeks in from start of production and the VIN should start with a 1
