440 cylinder wear #1520639

hello i have a 76 440 it was having bad bearing noises.all the rod bearings were brass on the rod side and not the cap side.it also had a broken ring. its already been rebuilt and bored 30 over.i would really like to just hone it and put new bearings and rings..i havent taken it it to the machine shop yet before i do id like some ideas from u guys first

Severe detonation caused that .

Yep, no doubt about that. Did the bearings come out of the rod ends and caps fairly easily as well? That would be another sign the bearings were getting hammered on. What do the rotors on the oil pump look like?

the rod caps took a few hits with a hammer on top to come apart,the engine was running pretty good,so i took off the manifolds and put headers on thats when the noises started.the engine is all dark brown inside like they never changed the oil?the center of the rods the color u see in the middle everything is that color in the bottem end

im new at engine diagnostic what exactly is severe detonation?the truck passed ca smog easy and like a week later it just started making a scratching noise which was the rod bearings.

What is severve detonation ... if you can HEAR it it's REALLY bad ...

Does it sound like a DIESEL when you have your foot in it ?

detonation is an explosion which is not what you want/need in a gasoline engine, what you want is a fast burn.

think of it this way it's the difference between pushing on something or punching it. if you were going shopping you would push the cart not punch it. detonation can be caused by many things or a combination of things and it will damage an engine if left uncorrected.
