Is this right I thought these cams were suppose to give great throttle response and sound awesome

I think it sounds exactly the same as the stock cam and actually more sluggish.

I emailed Hughes to see whats up and no response yet.

I wasnt expecting a miracle out of my 318 but would assume it would sound and pull slightly better

Time for a 340 or 360 I guess

If you have a problem, call them about it. Don't try and communicate the lack of satisfaction via e-mail.

What are the specs? Is it the flat tappet 318 whiplash for LA, 360 flat tappet for LA, 5.2 whiplash roller for Magnum, or 5.9 whiplash roller for Magnum?

The 5.9 whiplash roller in my 5.9 magnum lopes pretty good. Pulls good, has good throttle response, and is everything they promised.

Mine is 222/228 @ .050, 107 LSA installed at 104

Pulls to about 5200 rpm put 285 HP and 325 tq to the rear wheels. The rest of my combo is a junkyard 5.9 (stock heads, stock pistons) the 2bbl M1 EFI intake, headers into 3" exhaust, and the PCM tuned with SCT.

Its on my 74 Roadrunner was bone stock 318 2 barrel
I ordered the whiplash cam because I wanted the sound and performance and everyone loves them.
The 318 whiplash Cam a Wieand Action Plus and a Eddy 600 carb were installed by a friend who is a full time engine builder/Mechanic. he built my 340 which runs sounds and goes excellent!

I am not on here to bash Hughes as I have ordered a lot of good parts from them over the years and I was not expecting hemi power from a cam. I just dont understand why it has no Lope in it and why its so sluggish.

Im wondering if the wrong cam made it to the box..

Every flat tappet cam ive broken in seemed to lope more after it was run for a while. Where is your timing? Sounds like your motor is laboring, and at a high idle too. Im guessing you are running manifolds as well?

Ignition timing will have tons to do with how that cam responds.

now that I'm on my computer and I listened to the original video, I agree.

Tune the motor. idle sounds like it's up at about 1000-1200 rpm. dial it back to 750 and see what you get then. if it won't idle that low, find out why...timing off? idle mixture off? vacuum leaks?

I think my first question would be; Did you degree the cam or just line up the dots/.

2nd question is this; Did anyone bother to check the spec's of the cam? the numbers are inscribed on the cam.

Anthony, I am sorry to hear you are having problems with your engine. If a Whiplash cam does not have a lumpy idle then something is definitley wrong. I looked all through our e-mails since the time you ordered the cam and I could not find where you had e-mailed us. Maybe it got caught in the spam folder. Sorry about that. There are several things we should talk about to try and figure out what is going on. If possible, please give us a call and we will get to the bottom of it. We have had almost 100% positive feedback on the Whiplash series of cams so I would really like to get this corrected for you and make you a believer.

Get the total up into the mid 40s and that cam will wake up. I had a 318 with terrible seal that ran in 15s with a cam headers and cast Iron intake 3.55s

a lumbty bumbty idle is over-rated. Get a cam that works. As mentioned tune the car and then see what happens. FWIW your idle is pretty high, drop it to 700 and it will get more lumpy.

Tune, tune and tune some more! I have a Whiplash cam in my 383. At first it was OK performance wise, had a nice rumpity idle and would "bark" the tires from a stop. I was happy with it, but...kept messing with the tune. Now I have it where it will flat blow the 275/60R15 off from a standing start if I'm not careful. And that's just stepping on the go peddle, no burnout or nothing like that. The ol' 383 runs dang strong now, right on up to 6000 RPM. Idles at 750 RPM. Hughes came up with a nice street cam.

Are you suggesting the whiplash doesn't work? I'd beg to differ and say that it's an awesome street car cam.

Off idle power? Check
Good throttle response? Check
Power band that 'works' in street rpm ranges? Check
Enough vacuum for power brakes? Check

What cam would you reccomend?

Or are you just saying that you prefer a mellow smooth idle? If so, nothing wrong with that. Some guys like quiet, smooth engines, some guys like the sound of spooling turbos, or the sound of a shot of NO2 going off, and some like a lumpy sounding idle.
