Seen different guys post saying they used it. What's everyone's views on it? Looking at seeing where I can get it to do things that I don't want to sandblast like head light buckets and small things. Where do you buy it at? Called my jobber but they don't carry it. How's it sold? Gallons? How far does it go if you are soaking items?

It works great for lighter rust, heavy scale will need to be wire wheeled first and soaked longer. i soaked my 8 3/4 third member and it looked like new when it was done. I can't help you with where to buy it, I get mine from a farm supply store.

Ive used Evaporust and another product, Safest Rust Remover. Both work excellent to remove rust (any amount, thick or thin) the time you need to submerge it varies withe amount of rust. In a side by side test the www.safestrustremover.com won the battle on cost, the amount of rust a gallon will remove, and ease of use.

I just de-rusted my cooling system with it per Scott and looks like it did the trick. Got mine at advance auto. $22 a gallon.

I keep a 5 gallon bucket of Evaporust in my garage at all times. Whenever I have smaller parts that need to be cleaned, I toss them in it overnight. I have been very happy with how it works. I also did my third member in it and cleaned it off with Acetone before I coated it with RPM. I also used it in my ultrasonic cleaner for cleaning up my bolts, screws and fasteners.

I did a whole bunch of parts and a pedal car body.
Happy with it. Got it mail order than thru HF.
I'd suggest cleaning any parts first, grease seems to make it less potent.

Correct, it won't work through dirt or grease, parts need to be cleaned and degreased first for the best results. This goes for both Evaporust and Safest Rust Remover.

I'd say don't use it on galvanizing unless you want the galvanizing to either turn black or disappear.

Galvanizing deposits a zinc layer on the steel. The zinc corrodes first before the steel does, that's its job. It's called a sacrificial coating. A solution that is supposed to attack rust is probably acidic, so it will oxidize the zinc.

End result, no galvanizing or at least a very hard time getting it to look right.

That's my opinion.

R.

Works well but don`t expect it to last for a long period of time. It turns to crap rather quickly.

Correct on the galvanizing, it will remove the bond between the base metal and the coating. The reason is simple as explained above, since Evaporust removes corrosion, it removes the corrosion layer that bonds the two materials and they separate. I learned this the hard way, put a mint set of KH A body disc brake backing plates in to clean up some small rust specs and ended up watching all the nice zinc flakes slide off the clean shiny metal underneath when I rinsed them off .....DOH!

The Evapo-Rust web site says it is "sewerable" but also says "only the chelated iron content of the solution will dictate disposal requirements". Maybe this means you should filter it before pouring the liquid in the sewer?

I suspect you can filter it by (1) fold a large paper towel twice (2)insert the paper in a funnel (3) pour (4) dispose of paper in trash. (This is also a good way to filter coolant that is to be re-used.)

Interesting that the web site never mentions not to use it on galvanized or zinc plated items. Their lame web site looks to have been written and designed by an ex-used car salesman, not someone knowledgeable about chemistry.

The cheapest price I have found is to order it on line from Northern Tool and pick it up from their store with $0 freight. But next time I'll be trying Safest Rust Remover.

But I will say that Evapo-Rust proved me to be a genius when I hesitated to invest in sandblasting equipment. Sure glad I dawdled.

FYI, so will Safest Rust Remover. Same chemistry is involved, just a different blend. I have not seen either product harm anything else.

Really, no harm in sending it down the drain as long as you don't mix it with grease, oil, etc. the dissolved rust in it won't harm anything and is non toxic. This is another good reason to clean your parts of grease and oil before derusting them.
