In 1968 the VIN sequence # was not always on the pan rail, location also varied with the type of engine. Some 68 Hemi's were stamped on the top of the block at the bell housing mating flange in a non machined rough cast area. Typically you will only see the sequence number portion of the VIN.
Scott , I have yet to see the number down on the pan rail on ANY 68 model year engine , all have been on the bellhousing flange and it's always been the last 8 digits on the VIN .

Agreed,
And to that end (while I don't have any photos handy) I have recently heard of just such an animal from a very knowledgable/believable guy, he said he has one (untouched, unrestored car) that was stamped like that, right into the cast iron where there would be a raised pad but was none (66 Hemi block in a 68 Hemi car).
On a related note, here's something you don't see everyday, look where this Hemi block got stamped! This was sitting next to the car it originally came in and is absalutely authentic.
Stamped after a FRIDAY lunch I assume
