Was the whole vin stamped on the rear pan rail or just partial?

In 1968 the VIN sequence # was not always on the pan rail, location also varied with the type of engine. Some 68 Hemi's were stamped on the top of the block at the bell housing mating flange in a non machined rough cast area. Typically you will only see the last 8 digits including the sequence number portion of the VIN.

Scott , I have yet to see the number down on the pan rail on ANY 68 model year engine , all have been on the bellhousing flange and it's always been the last 8 digits on the VIN .

John I won't argue that, just leaving room for exceptions (as you'll notice I modified and added further detail to my post while you were picking it appart )

Agreed ,

BUT, and thats another one open to discussion, if it were on the pan rail it would be on a rough casting as I haven't seen the machined flat on any 68 MODEL year blocks

Agreed,

And to that end (while I don't have any photos handy) I have recently heard of just such an animal from a very knowledgable/believable guy, he said he has one (untouched, unrestored car) that was stamped like that, right into the cast iron where there would be a raised pad but was none (66 Hemi block in a 68 Hemi car).

On a related note, here's something you don't see everyday, look where this Hemi block got stamped! This was sitting next to the car it originally came in and is absalutely authentic.

There is/was a 69 340 Swinger around here that had part or all of the vin stamping on the oil pan rail.

I guess that guy has a numbers matching oil pan

...and, as stated above, on the 68 cars the vin sequence number was stamped on the engine block on top of the bellhousing flange on the as cast surface....same numbers are found on the trasmission.

...But those numbers dont match the body stampings as they would on 69 and later cars, what matches the body stampings is the sequence or production number on the fender tag. the fender tag of course will have the code for the HEMI engine.

So on a 68 car is very important to have both the VIN tag and the fender tag to confirm that both the body and the vin belong to a high performace car if the drivetrain is missing (which as we know is very common on the hemi cars)...
