I have a 67 Charger, the fuel gauge doesn't register fuel level.

I checked the gauge by grounding the wire at the sender, and it rises to full

I checked voltage at 5V

I ordered a new sender and still doesn't register.

Any thoughts on the problem would be appreciated

Did you make sure the sender is grounded? There should be a metal strap that goes from the outlet on the sender to the metal fuel line on the car. It jumps the short rubber hose that joins the lines.See the clip 14-72-5

If the ground Stumpy mentions isn't the issue, then you have an open wire between the sender and the gauge. BTW, two hose clamps and a length of wire will substitute for the strap linked.

He said when he grounded the sender wire the gauge worked so it's at the sender end.

I actually had the sender out of the car to make sure I had it grounded. Both were aftermarket senders. Is there a ohm reading they should be?

thanks
I checked them out and they seem good. I am at a loss on this. Everything checks out by themselves but as a unit I get no fuel level.

Make sure the float doesn't have a hole in it.

sending unit is out of the ca. I am manually raising the float. at the same time grounding it. I actually use a test light to make sure the unit is grounded.

Make sure the part inside the connector is contacting good.Ive seen them spread and or get corroded and not work.I always crimp them a but when I install the wire to the sender.I also run a ground from the battery to the sender to test them.Ive also seen where someone has tried to ground the sender on the hose instead of the nipple.I like to run a wire to the sender and ground it to the body. Its better than the factory clip. That and if the fuel line to the front isnt grounded the unit wont be grounded.Rocky

so, my end at the tank is a L shaped boot.
since it is a boot, there is a bit of rubber at the end before you hit metal.
even then, it is at only the sides.

is it possible, you don't have contact because of the rubber boot? the stud coming out is too short? or too thin to make contact with the sides?

try putting a bit of aluminum foil on the end of the stud coming.
enough that you feel pressure side to side putting it on. or pull the boot tight to one side.

You can just squeeze the boot lightly with a pair of pliers to tighten the connector.

Thanks everyone for your help. Have tried everything suggested and more. Still the gauge and sender will not work together. I even borrowed an original sender still nothing.

But as stated earlier each piece functions individually but not together.

It has to be something stupidly simple

Grounds as in electrical. Some sending units/ rheostats want to be "wet" IE: think fuel/vapors.
BUT be careful as a errant spark can send on to the local emergency room.

If the gauge and wiring are good which they appear to be from your posts, the problem is with the sending unit, grounds to it, or the connection to the unit. PERIOD!!! ground connections will send you to a mental institution, Nuff said!!! I suspect you think you have a good ground but the sending unit doesn't agree be careful

OK silly question, Out of the car, can you make the gauge work with the sending unit by grounding it, hooking it up and manually moving the float arm??

No I can not get the gauge with sender out of the car.

Thanks for your input. I feel the same as a bad ground. So I attached a ground wire from the sender to the frame plus I used a jumper cables from the battery to the sender.

I did not know about being wet.

I did get the gauge (with sender) to move just above empty and that was as far as it went. I am leaning towards the ground because the rheostat was a little warm, just can't think of a better way to ground it short of soldering it.

Plus I double checked the gauge by grounding it and it did go to full

You might submerge it in a large container of water & with some jumper wires run 12V to the input nipple & ground the case & see how it acts submerged. Hold it at the same angle it would be in the tank
