I run a high pressure race pump(cheap holley knock off) on my 88-440 truck. I run a 1/2" line from cell to fram GP1 filter, nippled to the pump,1/2" line up to the 2 port regulator at firewall,3/8" line to carb inlet(single or duel) 3/8" return line back to cell. I just used the 2 port reg that come with the pump(chrome holley knock off) it is not a return style regulator, but I have it set at 5psi on the port feeding my q-jet. on the other port I used a #2 phillips hex bit in the -AN 90* fitting. this reduces the 5psi down to 3psi I have duel gauges right at the outlet ports of regulator and they stay rock steady. the speed shop suggested a return line to help keep the PUMP cool and the extra benifit was keeping the fuel cooled down some. at first the pump got hot and I mean HOT! with just 1 line feeding the carb and other blocked off. IMHO,cavitation even though it has built in by-pass 3yrs street duty on the el-cheapo pump.

by adding the #2 phillips bit in the return line 90* fitting it keeps the pump from free flowing by adding 3 psi of back pressure on return line and steady 5 psi on the carb feed. i have braided line with -an fitting where you see it with alum fuel line along the frame rail, it is in the home A/C foam tubing to help keep heat down on the alum line. I have thought of a cool can coming off the regulator just before the carb..but thats a future project. works for my junk, been trouble free 3yrs so far..maybe 8,000 miles on it.

I see these regulators with 2 ports. They are listed as "Non return type". http://www.summitracing.com/parts/aei-13201/overview/ Why couldn't they be mounted at the rear of the carb after the feed lines to primary/secondary bowls, then to a return line? I'd use the 1/4" vent line as a return line still.

Thats they way the guys on Muscle Car and Horse Power did their systems. They said it was the best way to do it.
