I have a 70 Cuda 340 automatic, started the car and put it in reverse to back out of garage, moved about a foot and sounded funny. Put in forward and moved a foot then back into reverse and nothing. Goes into forward just fine but no reverse. Checked linkage and all is fine. Fluid level is good. Need help/advise, what could be the problem?
Advise greatly appreciated! Thanks.

Possible L/R band failure, L/R servo issue (cracked piston or blown seal). Could have an issue with the front clutch pack also. You will be missing 3rd gear if it has an issue. Will vehicle still roll in reverse or does it bind up? If it binds and wont move either direction could be and issue with the rear clutch pack (forward clutches) welded together causing no reverse. Your just going to have to drop the pan and have a look. You can fix a servo issue with the trans in the car. If the band is broken or you have a clutch pack issue, the tranny is going to have to come out.

Bet she was idling a bit fast and the ear snapped off L/R band. If thats the case , tranny has to come out . have seen it happen many many times .

Started the car and it was just at normal idle. Put it into reverse and started to back up but it felt funny and kinda stopped, put in forward and pulled up a few feet and tried reverse again and nothing. Was hoping it would be something minor as it has been fine til yesterday.

Drop the pan , reverse is the rear band applied and the front clutch pack applied , you lost one of 3 things , the rear band broke , the rear servo is not working or the front clutch pack is no longer working or holding.

It's not uncommon for the rear band link to pop out, easy fix after the pan is removed.

Clean it, if it's Dirty. Oil it, if it Squeaks. But: Don't fix it, if it Works!

Dropped the pan and 2 pieces fell into the drain pan. Both were from the low and reverse adjusting arm area. One piece is a cast piece with a bonded material on it and the other is a piece 1.250 x 1.00 x .120 thick. Not to savy on transmissions but am guessing the unit has to come out. Are these pieces part of the band or arm and are they replaceable/findable? Thanks.

The flat piece is the band strut , it could be put back in without trans removal , but it sounds like the band itself broke and the only way to fix that is to take the trans apart.

Thanks for the reply John, I am going to pull the trans out. Are the parts needed to rebuild available? I will be taking the unit to a transmission shop and hopefully they can rebuild it as it is the original unit to the car. Thanks....

Yes all the parts are readily available to rebuild the trans, there have been changes over the years so some parts are a little harder to find that others , but the basic rebuild stuff is out there .
