I've got a big block A Body so removing the manifold to repair is a problem. The shaft on the flapper valve is loose and leaking. Any in car fixes? I've used some red sealer and muffler repair which burned off. Any tricks? Solder, lead?? I've got the pipe down and can get inside and outside. Not enough room to pull the shaft out. Just want it to last when I put it back together.

Is it a 383 or a 440 ? I pulled the exhaust manifold on my 383 car even with the studs still in the head.

the only way to fix it is to pull the shaft out and bush the manifold ... or cover it in red hi heat RTV ...

It's a 440. The two bolts with sleeves are near impossible to get a wrench on. No leverage to turn em with a little box end. Gonna try and force a bushing around the shaft and into the hole in the manifold. Otherwise cut the flapper out and seal up the holes.

Remove manifold. Drill, Tap, Plug.

I would wager 99% of our cars are all fair-weather drivers, so the baffle really isn't all that necessary. I've taken them out of all four of my AMC's and noticed no ill effects from any. Though it did actually change the exhaust tone slightly on both the six cylinder cars!

You would never get a new bushing in there without drilling the hole oversize to accomadate the bushing.. As stated, pull the manifol, drill/tap the holes and put plugs in the holes...

I am truckless..

New bushing in manifold, manifold stayed on car. Took a dremel to the area around the shaft to clean it up, hit it with brake cleaner. Put the new bushing on a grinding wheel and beveled it to make the leading edge slightly tapered. Polished it smooth. Put it in the freezer and heated up the manifold, slid the bushing on the shaft, put a 5/16 box wrench over the shaft to get support on the full bushing and used a crowbar to get leverage against the engine block. Pressed against the wrench head and went right in. Put the Jesus clip on the shaft to hold everything together.

That's interesting so there was a bushing on that shaft that disintergrated and left the shaft and the hole in the manifold perfectly clean so you could slide in a replacement bushing ? Where did you get the bushing ?

The clips were missing on the shaft and the bushing came out of manifold on the shaft. It pushed the spring out to the end of the shaft. Shaft wobbled in the hole. Took spring off and replaced the rusty old bushing like I explained, Whether you believe it or not!

I can believe it but WHY? Pull the manifold fix it right and put it back in. I promise you I can do it right in less time than it took to cobble up something like that.

That's what I did.

This may be the case but I'm trying to figure out what you replaced?

I'll have to look at the manifold off my 383 car because I don't remember seeing any clips on the shaft or bushings . The only manifolds I have seen with bushings were later model manifolds and repair kits , of which I have an NOS 67-69 heat riser repair kit .

I don't see any 440 A body cuda's in your sig. So you are very welcome to come by and take this manifold off so I can do it right. Pack a bag!
