Numericaly high are low gears, and vice versa. I think I've seen as low as 5.57, never really looked hard tho. High gear would be 2.76s, I've never seen higher than that if they exist.
Well, art is art, isn't it? Still, on the other hand, water is water! And east is east and west is west and if you take cranberries and stew them like applesauce they taste much more like prunes than rhubarb does. Now, uh... Now you tell me what you know.

I thought 5.57's were the lowest! What make are these? any pics possible. More details please. I needed a lower set for my circle burner & 5.57 was all I could locate. I ended up using a 9" furd with 6.20's

No, NO .... ...on ALL counts !
A LOW gear ...is a SHORT gear. A high gear is tall, steep and BIGGER. And the steepest gear ever offered for the 8 3/4 was a 6.17. And the SHORTEST would be either a 2.41 or 2.45.
NEVER seen one of those though.

i know he does.
A low gear is a steep gear is a high number (like 4.11's)
a high gear is a tall gear is a low number (like 2.76)

when you put it in low, you drop it into 1 which is the highest numerical gear in the tranny. the lower the gear, the more umpf you get.
do a google on 'what is low gear' or low gear ratio

Yes 440, you have it backwards... at least in terms of a car. It's easy to get confused by it. In automotive circles, gear ratio and the description are tweaked...lol. The higher the torque multiplication, the lower the gear in terms of transmission gears you're in. First is a "lower" gear than 2nd..etc etc etc. This is carried over to the rear axle too. You're technically right with a lower gear ratio being 3.23:1 vs 5.13:1 because there's less turns of the drive gear vs the driven gear. But in automotive circles, it's not a standard way of describing things.
Well, art is art, isn't it? Still, on the other hand, water is water! And east is east and west is west and if you take cranberries and stew them like applesauce they taste much more like prunes than rhubarb does. Now, uh... Now you tell me what you know.
