I had actually never heard anyone suggest not using a proportioning valve, but i would like the idea if it is sound from an engineering standpoint.
You may not need a proportioning valve if the ratio of front caliper piston area to rear caliper piston area happens to be OK for the front to rear weight distribution of your car. Rotor diameters are also part of the equation, but not by much.
I don't have a prop valve on my 4 wheel disc Coronet, but I have not been able to test the balance yet. I test for balance by doing panic stops in the wet to make sure the car does not want to swap ends in a panic stop when it's wet outside. The rear disc kit is from Dr Diff. It's a small single piston Cobra caliper with an 11.7" rotor, so I may not need a prop valve.

rear line will come directly off the master, the front lines will require a standard brake tee to tee off the front left and right lines when eliminating the proportioning valve..... Mike
I'm assuming you can get a "T" fitting for the fronts from any parts store? Probably from a disc brake supplier..IE SSBC, Wildwood?

Mike, Thanks for the reply. I did mean the M/C as shown in the picture from Lefty, not the booster. I like the clean look of the wilwood M/C. One other question, aside from the 70s disc/drum unit you pictured is there a later (2-bolt) unit that will work as well that has a smallish bore? I am awaiting Lefty's reply to see if he used a stock push-rod or something aftermarket with the wilwood unit. Buuuuuuut, if there is a late model unit that works (without a proportioning valve) I might take a look at that. By the way, i may be asking several questions as i started a simple all drum to all disc conversion project and i now currently have no suspension under the car, front or rear....everything is out. Yeah, i cant help myself! -Garrett

I'll check today to see if it was the stock or aftermarket push rod that I used.
Hey Lefty,
Thanks in advance for checking the push rod. I am curious as to your answer.

UPDATE............ almost done,,,,enclosed some before and after pics....I went with the SSBC kit so far so good,,,seems like a real nice kit,,,bolt on.... Still have to change the MC,,,,and then bleed it,,,, I am going to use a different MC for the car,,,,,the one supplied is "sub par" from what i hear,,,,, I am going to use a 74 Dart manual disc MC Napa PN TS101571,,this is a smaller bore piston,,,which should work better,,,,( only $29 as well )..........(thanks Ron) PS,,,mine came with a Porportioning valve,,,i was going to install it,,,,, ( i have drums on the back,,,and the car is non power brakes,,,(manual),,,with an adjustable push rod i put in a long time ago,,,,, Before... Good fit behind the Weld Prostars,,,,,,,,,

Looking good Doc ! Maybe install some poly swaybar bushings while you're under the car. Time to delete those Jaz buckets and install the stock seats. It's slowly becoming a street car again. Ron

Ron, Do you think my "current" MC will work with the new disc brake setup ? I changed it when i went from power to manual,,,a long time ago ( after the solid cam change ) I "think" it's a smaller bore...(not sure) Anyway to know ? Is there a way to measure the bore ??,,,ie,,,just by looking at the back of the MC,,,,would i be able to tell what bore size i have ?? ( i could measure it from inside the car,,,?) I think you said 7/8" is what i need........... thanks,,,,,,, Doug

yes just get up in there with a small scale & a light & it might help you to make several marks on the scale with a magic marker at 7/8, 15/16, 1" etc. On the prop valve Eberg is a proponent of tossing the factory one & adding an adjustable one in the rear line but a prior poster made a good case for using an M body one plus an adj one if needed to fine tune it as if there's no factory type unit the fronts will wear too fast & the front pressure needs to be modulated so that the rears can come into play & share some of the load.

Doug, the drum brake MC is not the same as a disc brake unit....both reservoirs are the same size on a drum MC. The disc brake unit has a larger reservoir on the front brake reservoir. Compare the new SSBC MC to the one currently on your car and you'll see what i mean.
To measure the bore size you need to remove the MC and run a tape across the plunger to see how big it is.
Don't forget to save the small bushing that attaches to the end of your adjustable pushrod. You don't need the brake rod to fall out at the most inopportune time.
A 7/8 or 15/16 bore MC will work fine with that 4 piston setup.

Thanks Ron, I am going out to the garage soon,,,and pulling the old MC out of the car. The "new" one supplied with the SSBC system looks to be 1" bore ? ( when i measured it ) I am going to get the NAPA unit,,and be done with it. I was looking at my brake lines,,,and where i might put the proportioning valve (PV)....not sure if i want to mount it down on the frame,,,,or re-do my brake lines,(which look rough),,and then run the PV up on the fender apron... I might pull all the brake lines out,,,put new ones in,,,to look nicer,,,and plumb it the right way.... I hate bending brake lines,,, I have to see if there is a tool to make the job easier and look more professional........ thanks, Doug

MC is now out/off,,,,,bore size looks to be 15/16" I tore up the old MC getting the pushrod out,,,due to the rubber grommet holding it in,,,( glad i put it in before lol) The pushrod i have is adjustable,,,so i can dial it in to the new MC..and will put another rubber grommet on the pushrod to hold it in place.... thanks Ron,,the kit i got had some "spare" line that i can make work,,,, I am likely going to change all the line coming off the distribution block/and running up to the MC,,,,i think they make a tool for making nice bends in brake line ?,,,

ALL DONE........... everything is installed I have the new MC installed,,,pushrod is back in with rubber grommet on the pushrod. I put new brake lines on to plumb in the porportioning valve.... Just have to bleed the brakes..... which opened up a new project ,,,,as i cracked open the rear bleeder screw,,,it broke off.... so.....i will put in another wheel cylinder or see if i can get the bleeder screw piece out ( doubt it ) also,,,,while i had the rear brakes apart,,,i noticed the pads were shot. ...so i guess it was a good thing the bleeder screw acted up,,,otherwise i wouldnt have pulled the rear drums off to look till the spring....

I'm thinking of doing this conversion also on my 68 superbee. i was looking at a kit by mp brakes which supplies a bolt in kit including a booster. Has anybody used this kit? many thanks
That is what I used on my '68 Coronet with manual brakes and it stops very well. I think the whole schmeer was just a bit under $1000 3yrs. ago and at that time they offered free shipping in the U.S.
