What aftermarket Front Disc brake setup to use 69B body - 11/10/08 02:02 AM

I would like to hear what you guys have used,,,what you like,,dislike,,etc,,,switching from front drums,,,to disc brakes,,,,What did you use on your car ???

This is on the Charger,,,,

I would prefer to buy a KIT,,,as opposed to piece mealing the parts

Is there a particular brand you like,,,,,quality ,,, etc,

Did the "kit" come with EVERYTHING,,,,,was it a easy bolt on deal ??

Car is STREET driven only,,,

I need to improve the stopping power for this thing,,,pretty hilly' here in Kentucky,,,and it can make for a scary ride if i need to stop in a hurry,,,lol

Thanks,,,, Doug

I can't reccomend a kit as I lean toward piece mealing it that way if i need a part I can more than likely get it at the local parts house vs. having to deal wit hthe inflated price and lead time trying to get it from the KIT seller .

on a car that doesn't need the stock look i'd lean toward the stock 73 a body drum spindle , ARE adaptors for VIPER calipers and 11.75 rotors .

Go to the AREngineering web site...Not a complete kit, but their stuff works! I have had the Cordoba rotor,Wilwood 4 piston caliper set up on my 69 GTX and have not had any issues what so ever since I installed it about 4 years ago. Hang on ...it will stop!

We sell a 13" bolt on deal with forged disc spindles, but you will need 17" wheels to do so...

Re: What aftermarket Front Disc brake setup to use 69B body - 11/12/08 12:42 AM

I went with the SSBC kit. The front brakes use 65 mustang stuff so I am able to get pads, etc.. from the local auto parts store. And I can run the original 14" wheels too.

The kit works well, but took me some time to get it to work well. I went with their power brake system on my 70 roadrunner. The booster and m/c are late 70's corvette units if I remember right... and I just could not get the brakes to work well at all. Couldn't lock the wheels up at all and felt like I hardly had any brakes during a panic stop situation.

So i ditched the booster and m/c and I finally bought a dual diaphram booster for a 70 roadrunner and a 15/16" m/c for a Dart and the brakes works perfectly now.

Don't know if I would go with SSBC again or not....it was $$$$.

doctordiff has a couple versions depending on what you have for wheels too. but his site is a little outdated. pm him

I used Viper stuff on my car but it wasn't a complete kit. You have to swap to the late model knuckles first and you'll have to find those in a wrecking yard or at a swap meet.

Master Power Brakes sell new reproductions of the desirable late model A body spindles. They'll also sell you a stock style complete kit made to work with 14" wheels.

My choice was a 13" Baer system with the late model spindles and 17" wheels. It works well - I can stop at speed with confidence. I do need to get a dual diaphram booster however to get full benefit; a project for this winter.

This seems to be a common theme for those using the supplied MC that comes with the SSBC kit.

What a 4 piston caliper setup needs is a small bore (high pressure) MC instead of the large bore unit that comes with the kit.

Other than the MC mismatch i was impressed by the fit and quality of the SSBC kit. The added bonus is that it bolts up to the factory drum brake spindles....no need to rip the front end apart and swap knuckles.

Aerospace Pro Street, that is what I have. Doug, you can have my front disc breaks that I had on the Road runner If you would like. They worked really well.

I'm thinking of doing this conversion also on my 68 superbee.
i was looking at a kit by mp brakes which supplies a bolt in kit including a booster.
Has anybody used this kit?
many thanks

The MP booster set up is a GM peice, with a GM master, a very long set up, comes right up to the battery, performance is sub par at best,......SSBC makes a better front bolt on conversion if you want to retain the drum spindles, and avoid the complete change out of your stock spindles,......I wouldn't bother with the MC or booster,....another GM piece,.....if you can find a dual diaphram bendix Mopar booster use it, radically enhances the performance of the brakes, don't forget to change out your proportioning valve, to a disk/drum set up, a small bore disc/drum master works best,......if you decide on rear disks, the SSBC is a good set up,......if you 4 wheel disk it, you can eliminate the proportioning valve, the rear line comes directly off the master, you'll need to supply a brake tee of course to "tee off" the front 2 lines

I highly recommend the 4 wheel disc conversion, your car would become a completely different animal, as far as braking performance!

Re: What aftermarket Front Disc brake setup to use 69B body - 11/15/08 01:11 AM

Dayclona, I read your email but have a few questions. I am currently installing a manual SSBC force 10 4-wheel disc on my 69 superbee and had read all of the issues with the supplied brake booster. I was considering using the Wilwood cast aluminum booster which provides both a 7/8" bore and clean good looks. the issue i believe is that the brake piston rod does not snap/click into this booster like a normal chrysler M/C. Is that correct? If i were to use the wilwood M/C can i still run without a proportioning valve. I had actually never heard anyone suggest not using a proportioning valve, but i would like the idea if it is sound from an engineering standpoint. Please advise.

Garret,.....I'm assuming you mean the wilwood cast aluminun master cylinder,......I don't think they have a cast aluminum booster? .....the wilwood Master cylinder is a nice piece,....you would have to alter the end of your manual pedal rod, by either welding on a treaded sleeve 3/8-24 if I recall, just make sure the sleeve end that goes toward your rod end GOES OVER and gets welded, don't butt weld it (think safety!)......you may also be able to use a portion of the adjustable Mopar Performance Adjustable manual brake pedal rod?......if you prefere a factory master cylinder, I'd recommend a disk/drum 70 B body application....Cardone # M1614 If I recall, or AutoZone M1475....pic attached

Garret, ONLY! If your running 4 wheel disc and a disc/drum master you will not need a proportioning valve or adjustable bias valve,....rear line will come directly off the master, the front lines will require a standard brake tee to tee off the front left and right lines when eliminating the proportioning valve.....I built many 4 wheel disc systems for early B bodies, as well as E bodies, and later B bodies using this system, tens of thousands of miles with no failures on my own cars, as well as customers cars......hope this helps you out

I have the Wilwood 7/8" master cylinder. I remember the push rod did snap into the piston pocket. I'll check today to see if it was the stock or aftermarket push rod that I used.

You may not need a proportioning valve if the ratio of front caliper piston area to rear caliper piston area happens to be OK for the front to rear weight distribution of your car. Rotor diameters are also part of the equation, but not by much.

I don't have a prop valve on my 4 wheel disc Coronet, but I have not been able to test the balance yet. I test for balance by doing panic stops in the wet to make sure the car does not want to swap ends in a panic stop when it's wet outside. The rear disc kit is from Dr Diff. It's a small single piston Cobra caliper with an 11.7" rotor, so I may not need a prop valve.

I'm assuming you can get a "T" fitting for the fronts from any parts store? Probably from a disc brake supplier..IE SSBC, Wildwood?

Re: What aftermarket Front Disc brake setup to use 69B body - 11/15/08 06:03 PM

Mike,

Thanks for the reply. I did mean the M/C as shown in the picture from Lefty, not the booster. I like the clean look of the wilwood M/C. One other question, aside from the 70s disc/drum unit you pictured is there a later (2-bolt) unit that will work as well that has a smallish bore? I am awaiting Lefty's reply to see if he used a stock push-rod or something aftermarket with the wilwood unit. Buuuuuuut, if there is a late model unit that works (without a proportioning valve) I might take a look at that.

By the way, i may be asking several questions as i started a simple all drum to all disc conversion project and i now currently have no suspension under the car, front or rear....everything is out. Yeah, i cant help myself!

UPDATE............
almost done,,,,enclosed some before and after pics....I went with the SSBC kit
so far so good,,,seems like a real nice kit,,,bolt on....
Still have to change the MC,,,,and then bleed it,,,,

I am going to use a different MC for the car,,,,,the one supplied is "sub par" from what i hear,,,,,
I am going to use a 74 Dart manual disc MC Napa PN TS101571,,this is a smaller bore piston,,,which should work better,,,,( only $29 as well )..........(thanks Ron)

PS,,,mine came with a Porportioning valve,,,i was going to install it,,,,, ( i have drums on the back,,,and the car is non power brakes,,,(manual),,,with an adjustable push rod i put in a long time ago,,,,,

Before...

Good fit behind the Weld Prostars,,,,,,,,,

Looking good Doc !

Maybe install some poly swaybar bushings while you're under the car.

Time to delete those Jaz buckets and install the stock seats. It's slowly becoming a street car again.

Ron,
Do you think my "current" MC will work with the new disc brake setup ?
I changed it when i went from power to manual,,,a long time ago ( after the solid cam change )
I "think" it's a smaller bore...(not sure)

Anyway to know ?

Is there a way to measure the bore ??,,,ie,,,just by looking at the back of the MC,,,,would i be able to tell what bore size i have ?? ( i could measure it from inside the car,,,?)

I think you said 7/8" is what i need...........

thanks,,,,,,,

yes just get up in there with a small scale & a light & it might help you to make several marks on the scale with a magic marker at 7/8, 15/16, 1" etc. On the prop valve Eberg is a proponent of tossing the factory one & adding an adjustable one in the rear line but a prior poster made a good case for using an M body one plus an adj one if needed to fine tune it as if there's no factory type unit the fronts will wear too fast & the front pressure needs to be modulated so that the rears can come into play & share some of the load.

Too late but the Praise-Dyno upgrade for the 11" Hemi drum is more than adequate for my street needs. Ceramic-blend for the shoe and stiffer springs work great.

Doug, the drum brake MC is not the same as a disc brake unit....both reservoirs are the same size on a drum MC. The disc brake unit has a larger reservoir on the front brake reservoir. Compare the new SSBC MC to the one currently on your car and you'll see what i mean.

To measure the bore size you need to remove the MC and run a tape across the plunger to see how big it is.

Don't forget to save the small bushing that attaches to the end of your adjustable pushrod. You don't need the brake rod to fall out at the most inopportune time.

A 7/8 or 15/16 bore MC will work fine with that 4 piston setup.

Re: What aftermarket Front Disc brake setup to use 69B body - 11/16/08 10:02 PM

Thanks Ron,
I am going out to the garage soon,,,and pulling the old MC out of the car.
The "new" one supplied with the SSBC system looks to be 1" bore ? ( when i measured it )
I am going to get the NAPA unit,,and be done with it.

I was looking at my brake lines,,,and where i might put the proportioning valve (PV)....not sure if i want to mount it down on the frame,,,,or re-do my brake lines,(which look rough),,and then run the PV up on the fender apron...

I might pull all the brake lines out,,,put new ones in,,,to look nicer,,,and plumb it the right way....

I hate bending brake lines,,,

I have to see if there is a tool to make the job easier and look more professional........

thanks,

Doug

Re: What aftermarket Front Disc brake setup to use 69B body - 11/17/08 01:59 AM

Doug, i plumbed the PV just after the distribution block....along the frame rail. You will have to purchase a short section of brakeline to splice the PV into the rear line.

Fine Lines makes a very nice pre-bent line for the rear brakes. Use the mild steel (instead of stainless) as it's easier to seal up. I've found that stainless is too hard and leaks become an issue.

Re: What aftermarket Front Disc brake setup to use 69B body - 11/17/08 02:35 AM

MC is now out/off,,,,,bore size looks to be 15/16"

I tore up the old MC getting the pushrod out,,,due to the rubber grommet holding it in,,,( glad i put it in before lol)

The pushrod i have is adjustable,,,so i can dial it in to the new MC..and will put another rubber grommet on the pushrod to hold it in place....

thanks Ron,,the kit i got had some "spare" line that i can make work,,,,

I am likely going to change all the line coming off the distribution block/and running up to the MC,,,,i think they make a tool for making nice bends in brake line ?,,,

Re: What aftermarket Front Disc brake setup to use 69B body - 11/29/08 01:29 AM

ALL DONE........... everything is installed

I have the new MC installed,,,pushrod is back in with rubber grommet on the pushrod.

I put new brake lines on to plumb in the porportioning valve....

Just have to bleed the brakes.....

which opened up a new project ,,,,as i cracked open the rear bleeder screw,,,it broke off....
so.....i will put in another wheel cylinder or see if i can get the bleeder screw piece out ( doubt it )

also,,,,while i had the rear brakes apart,,,i noticed the pads were shot. ...so i guess it was a good thing the bleeder screw acted up,,,otherwise i wouldnt have pulled the rear drums off to look till the spring....

That is what I used on my '68 Coronet with manual brakes and it stops very well. I think the whole schmeer was just a bit under $1000 3yrs. ago and at that time they offered free shipping in the U.S.
