Good call. See if the reverse lights outside the car come on. I just had mine apart in the spring. Also, make sure the switch is good, and the correct one for your car. A guy at NAPA sold me the wrong one which I had to return for what they had listed as a wrong item.

Double check the position of the white/black wire running from the light into the bulkhead connector, and make sure it's located in the proper cavity.
If the dash reverse light illuminates, you know it's grounding, so the problem is in the wire which feeds power to the light.
This setup was removed from a '76 Duster 4-speed car:
