Well,guys...I went for my 6-week checkup after those blood vessels bursted in my punkin. The doc told me that I can no longer drive my race car or pretty much anything else due to the possibility of a reoccurance. My options are very limited. If they do surgery, there is a high risk factor that I will be paralized on my left side. There is one more procedure they discussed but I will know more on that later. I do plan on keeping my car, having Jimmy finish up the top end and I would be honored if he drives for me. I think there is a lesson here to be learned by all..If you do not feel well, please get checked out!! I know you Super Pro guys get a physical every year or 9.99 and quicker racers. Stay well,my friends, and go out there and win some rounds!! Ted

Sorry to hear this Ted. For what it's worth, I drive a camaro for a friend of mine that's 74 years old and doesn't drive anymore. He still LOVES going to the track and says he has just as much fun watching his car run. He guides me into the water box and watches the car leave from the starting line on every pass...makes him feel better about not driving I guess. He's still the crew chief obviously since it's his car. Really more like a "supervisor" since I'm the one spinning the wrenches and tuning, lol. Just saying I know how much fun he still has w/ it even though he can't drive anymore.

Since we're the same age this hits home man. Some good replies here already Ted. First priority is your health both for you and for your family. The car can be driven by someone you trust and IIRC you do have grandchildren coming up. Lots of adjustments for sure but being around to make those adjustments is the most important thing. I'm sure anything you need help with will bring out the volunteers. If I was local to you I would love to educate you on being a proficient first round duck in your proven winning car. Listen to your docs.

Old, tired, and sometimes broke down. Me, not my car...

This isn't "Game over", it's a mid-course correction. "Game over" is 6 feet under!

Got cool car? Check!
Got experience with racing cool car? Check!
Can mentor / sponsor another driver to continue racing cool car? Check!

Players move on to coaching, coaches move on to management / ownership.

Adjust game plan and move forward from there.

Well Ted that is not good news. But as proposed by others you have options. I am waiting for my granddaughter to be old enough to drive. She is the onlt one of my grand- children who has any interest in the car. Best of luck. Jim

Really sorry to hear that Ted. Like everyone else says I think you should finish the car and put someone else behind the wheel. Once the car is proven and safe, slow it down...

If i'm not mistaken you have a grandson who is of driving age and has shown interest in racing. Let him make some laps in the car. As he becomes a better driver and you feel comfortable, give him some more power. Eventually he'll be running the car flat out, and you'll be smiling ear to ear. My dad sat out a number of years while My brother and I piloted his car. He enjoyed it more than racing himself.

It's not the end by any means. Keep your head up

I simply wrenched a car for about 8 years.......I got the occasional lap in and all the street driving I wanted.
But my better half drove because she could flat cut down a tree.
In all honesty , I enjoyed my job as much or more than she did.
I had very little pressure and took a lot of satisfaction knowing that I was sending a safe and consistent car to the line every time.
I made all decisions regarding dialing and everything related to the car.
Having a good driver sure helped , but it was a real gas.
I think you could find yourself in the same spot......well , except for the fringe benefits I had.
Best of luck in what ever you wind up doing , but it ain't over till the fat lady sings and you can't hear her.

Certainly not good to hear, but your health & proper operation of "The Punkin" are the top priority. Like everyone else says, put someone in the car and be the Boss.

same here hope the best for you. I have just as much fun tuning the car and letting my son drive. so it really doesn't matter as long as you can enjoy the sport.

I know your feelings Ted... I'm there... I did like
being the crew chief with another driver... its actually
easier on both the driver and the crew chief.. each
has a job to concentrate on

Sorry to hear this Ted but like others have said, its not the end of the world. Watching and helping YOUR car make passes at the track can and is great fun. Listen to your Doctor but don't be afraid to reach out for second and third opinions to see if there are other options as far as cures. I hate when I hear the "what if" out of a Doctors mouth. I and many other members of this site have had health issues that would have kept us out of our cars. The first words out of my Doctors mouth EVERY time I see him "are you still racing" mine, heck yaa. Remember this just happened and you are still pretty young so give it time.

Sorry to hear this news Ted. But as stated this is not game over. Just time to move onto a new chapter of your racing activities. Time to become a car owner rather than a driver. Lots of guys do it that way, and not all for medical reasons. It will keep you involved in the game and you will still get to see all your friends. Best of luck and take care buddy.

You can still be involved in racing, just find a driver.
Good luck, take care of yourself, and have the car ready for Mopar Max.

I drive for an old guy as well. He still has a blast and gets to drink beer and tell lies wile I work on his Nova and go rounds

We split the winnings on his car but not on mine
He does pay entry and gas and I try as hard as I can when I'm in his car but do feel more at ease in my Valiant.
I drove both cars last year at the local Bracket finals and we went several rounds in both cars. He still talks about all the times we have and is ready to go tonight, so I say keep at it till it ain't fun.
