Since the other post took off in another direction I posted this new one.
I have a 70 runner 4 speed car. It has the switch on the clutch pedal to keep it from starting unless depressed. Shop manual shows it goes to the starter relay, however the starter relay I have is a 4 speed one with only one terminal like on a 69 4 speed. Is the 70 4speed starter relay different than a 69?
Anyone have a pic of a 70 4speed starter relay all wired up?
Thanks for any help.

Yes, the 1970 would have used the same relay for auto or four speed. I would keep it as is, though. The clutch safety switch causes you to put all the pressure of the pressure plate on the semi-dry thrust bearing on startup...

What year did the go with the switch that prevents starting in gear?? My 68 never had it just the light to tell you when in reverse.

I assume your 69 did not either and when they did they used the regular relay that has the ground that has to be grounded by the Neutral safty switch.

So I'm assuming you should get a 70 and up relay (or any auto relay)
and use the switch you put on the clutch to ground it.

There just a few years with the switch. I've had several FWD Mopars with manual transmissions (80, 87, 89, 92) and none of them had the switch.

Thanks everyone for the help. I think I will just keep the relay and not plug in the clutch switch. I think i am smart enough not to try to start a car without the clutch in.

That's my point, that's what's hard on the thrust bearing. I put the car in neutral with my left foot on the brake. Let the oil pressure come up before putting 3,000lbs on the bearing. I don't sit at a light with the car in the gear and pedal down for the same reason.

The clutch "safety " switch is potentially hard on the thrust bearing. I think every new car has one. My daily driver Mustang does and even though I've yet to see any problems due to it I still don't like them. As for the safety aspect if the car is in gear and you start it with the clutch in on a rainy or snowy day it would be easy for your foot to slip off the pedal and you could do real damage. So much for safety. Personally I really like the way the Tremec TKO works in my 'Cuda. The ground goes from the transmission and it will only start in neutral, clutch has nothing to do with it.
