My trans is out for an engine swap so I'd like to replace the front seal in the 727. Its not leaking but its been in there for over 10 years (less then 3000 miles though). What is the best way to get the old seal out?

Unless you have the tool ...I would take it to a trans shop. I would think that they would do-it for a 20-spot.

Get a screwdriver and knock it sideways, then grab with pliers and pull out. No big deal. Drive new seal in with a mallet ot small hammer evenly. Done deal. I've been doing it this way for 30 years.

A seal removal tool is easy to find and pretty cheap. You could make your own out of scrap metal if you had to.

To remove it ....sounds good.

But to INSTALL ? .... what you suggest is toooo risky(IMO) ...you tweak the seal wrong and the trans has to come out - AGAIN.

And .... I HAVE to ask this question ... if you have been doing this for 30 years ....WHY don't you have the proper tool to do-it-right that costs less than a 10 spot ?

Isn't hard to make a driver out of some PCV pipe. Popping the seal out is a simple job with out investing in special tools to do it. It will take you longer to find the tool, in the tool box than to improvise with a long thin screw driver and pop it out.

that how Ive done it as well. piece of cake. Clean up the mating surface well and use a LIGHT coat or rtv around the outside of the seal. grease the new seals rubber before installing the TC

Thanks for the replies. I used PVC pipe to drive in the rear trans seal when the trans was in the car. Worked great.

on the new seal going in I put some vaseline on the back side to keep the round spring from popping off & tap it in evenly with 2 small hammers at 3 o'clock & 9 o'clock & as mentioned sealer(permatex #2 for me)not RTV on the OD & some ATF on the ID.

Check your converter hub. If its worn or grooved it will never seal.

Regardless of how you remove or install. Test fit the new seal on the convertor BEFORE installing in the trans.

I've been down the road of aftermkt ft pump seals leaking on factory convertors. just an FYI

You might as well change the front bushing while you've got it out.

Don't make the same mistake I did...If you pull the pump, get new washers for the pump bolts. They're coated, and will only seal once. Also, Ultra Grey silicone works wonders in conjunction woth those washers.

Try running the trans a little on the low side, like 1 pint low when warm. 727s like to spit fluid out of the front breather and then it looks like the seal is leaking.

That's the way my Dad taught me to do it, he was a mechanic for 36 year's. Clean up any burr's on the surface after you pry the old seal out, lightly sand the surface to clean it up, a little silicone on the outside of the new seal and tap it in straight.

If your only changing the seal.Another old trick is to take the spring off the seal, spiral the connection to seperate ends and cut off 1/8" on the female side of the spring and spiral it back together for a tighter squeeze on the converter snout.
