Got a buddy that has a 90 Rc for sale and said its the last yr they used the international frames. His cousin "life long Mechanic" told him that so he believes him. Some people. Why would they decide after 10 yrs to used a dif frame and keep the same body style . Just because they worked on cars sinse a kid and are supposedly a Mechanic doesnt mean they know what their talking about
I simply said Not true and if so why do truck crossmembers etc swap

It is very possible that ChryslerCorp subcontracted the frames to International, especialy if International had extra capacity. I recently spent an hour talking to a retired AO Smith welder who made frames for most GM cars including Corvettes. He did have tales to tell. For example, every year the AO Smith guys would put a Chrysler on a full perimeter frame and give the Chrysler brass a ride, showing how much better it rode and how much quieter with the full frame, but ChryCo stuck to the unibody. Or, how, the tabs for the IFS on chevelles, etc, would get bent going down the line and had to be hammered back into line by the guys who put on the front suspension. That until someone invented the hydropierce machinery that punched the holes at the end of the line!

Remember, too, that a major US auto manufacturer had John Deere make blocks when the original manufacturer was short on capacity.

Why change frame manufacturers in the middle of a body style? $2.99 lower price per frame!

R.

I agree it is possible for manufacturers of all kinds of products to subcontract to rivals to keep the factories running. Witness the fact that during WW2 a lot of Jeeps were built by Ford! In my own experience, the Whirlpool corp makes a lot of appliances that are branded Sears Kenmore and some other private brands. It only makes sense!

This same guy was also claiming that the "international" frame was a full box frame, not a channel frame like a standard truck frame would be.

And these "international" frames were leftover from International. IIRC the posting.

Checker stamped the cabs for some of the medium-duty trucks like D-400,500,600 etc. I believe.
I've never heard of an IH connection, maybe that's what he's thinking of?

The Ford contract was mandated by the US Government.

ford owns alot of cummins stock and supposedly tried a hostile takeover that didnt work----chrysler has had a business arrangment with cummins since the 1950,s when they sold a diesel engine plant in england to cummins--they have been putting cummins engines into overseas chyslers/trucks for 60 years....bob

Ford, Case and another company I can't recall right now teamed up and bought 25% of Cummins stock to forestall a hostile take over attempt. Ford long ago divested themselves of the stock and their board position.

I work for Cummins it is not owned by Ford. Ford had some stake in them some time ago, but sold it off. Many rumors and old information floating around out there, just because it is on the internet doesn't mean its true. A simple search even showed a internet post from 2003 that was 100% copied and reposted again in 2011. I find it funny how people always forget to look at dates--especially dredging up old internet posts.

Here is the major breakdown
