Are you relying on the stock factory gauge, or do you have a good aftermarket gauge?

I had a real over heating problem with my big block, and found the cure was in cleaning out the frost plugs and power washing the coolant passages and re coring the rad.
I thought I had re cored the rad the summer before but when my friend and Mechanic took it to his rad guy they told me that my rad had just been cleaned and painted.( it was full of stop leak all thru the engine from the old guy before me trying to stop the heater core from leaking)
Find I guy you can trust.
Thats the hardest part of all we do.
Radiator is stock, and was re-cored and flushed the previous owner said 3 years ago. I took the cap off tonight and it looks really clean. What aftermarket radiator should i get?

who makes the best aftermarket gauge? or gauge cluster? already an aftermarket VOLTAGE gauge under the dash.

Before spending money on a gauge, you could check that yours makes sense first. I am lucky enough to have a friend in HVAC business with one of those laser guided, hand held temperature sensor deals. You can check just about everything with one of those: manifold temps, head, rad, water pump, hoses, block, a dogs butt.... Might be a good idea to check timing and air fuel if you can. Those things, when incorrect, can cause an engine to overheat even when the cooling system is spot on.

What is this in? Regardless, if the temperature gauge is operating properly then try the following fix. Go out and get a thermostat for a 440 in a motor home. This will open at a lower temp and keep the car from initially heating up. I would also suggest you run a radiator flush. Not for the radiator, but the block. The engine cooling ports could be clogged or semi clogged. If you don't have a fan shroud, invest.
If it heats up when driving on the highway this screams of pour cooling circulation. It would just plain overheat if the thermostat wasn't opening.

In my 66 Coronet with a 440, I used one 16" electric puller fan and still had heat problems sitting in traffic on hot days. I added a second 16" pusher fan on the other side of the radiator and now I can sit in 90+ degrees traffic all day and never get over 205 The second fan does not turn on until the temp reaches 200. I offset the fans for max coverage on the radiator core. You can get quality 16" fans for $100 each.

If you have a fan clutch it is time to replace it. It's not working anymore.
Note if you have a 4 core the new replacement units are too tall (will hit the radiator) to put in. Use a Hayden 3665 or a 2765. I think it was $39

id like to do that but have a cooler on the front side and that fan and shroud on the other side- what would I have to do?

I've got one from a core 400. It is about 19.5" diameter and has 7 large blades with cupped ends. Along with a fresh clutch, it should help in the air flow department.
Bouchillon Performance also sells a high capacity 6 blade.
