I have a 408 stroker that I run a 780 Holley double pumper on and it runs well. I am experimenting with an 850 DP to see if it gains anything. I am having trouble with the carb not idling at all. It will start up and run great at about 1800 and above. It is crisp and responsive. But if I try to idle it at all it just dies like you turned the key off. I can't even turn it down past 1500 or it just dies, no cough no sputter. My old 780 DP carb idles just fine. Whats goofed up in this carb that it won't idle at all. The floats are set correctly. It is fed by an electric fuel pump. Jets are 72 and 76. Power valve is 3.5. I have had it apart and cleaned and blew out every passage.

open up the mixture screws... you should be able to
go up to 3 turns out IF NEEDED... at 1800 rpm its
not on the idle circuit.... start at 2 turns out then
turn the idle down and turn the mixture screws in till
the idle drops... this part takes 2 or 3 times to
get the balance..... make sure the timing is right
before you start this... sometimes you need to up the
initial timing
EDIT
I forgot to say... when the rpm drops turns the mixture
screw out about 1/8 of a turn... then do it all again
till you get the idle where you like it

Not an expert but you may want to check you carb number on this chart to get a starting point. I don't use power valves myself as my junk is strip only and I leave off the brake.
