A buddy of mine has a 70 Road Runner, not an A12 car but I figure you guys would know this, its an original 383 4 speed car.

He says his steering column has the arm on it under the hood for auto trans linkage and it also has the collar for the shifter inside the car.

He's looked at a couple other 4 speed cars and seen the same thing.

Did Ma just use one column in 70 for autos and manual trannys?

Its not for column shift, but for reverse interlock.

How does that work?

He said there's no linkage attached at the moment and if he moves the collar then he can't turn the key?

Is there something he's missing, he did say there was a lot wrong on this car when he bought it.

Thanks for the help.

More info on the 1970 only lockout system can be found here;

I have another project in the works that goes into it in greater detail also, it should be ready for all to see in a month or so.

can't tell you how glad i am that i read this post, and i almost passed it by!

mine is a 70 as well, and a while back i pulled into the garage, and the key would not turn to the lock position, and so was essentially stuck in the ignition switch! it would turn to the off, aux and start, but i couldn't turn it to lock.

so, that means the key is always in the car.

now i've been meaning to start a rebuild on the column for other reasons, but i was hoping to put that off. but with the key in the ignition, i can't leave the car out of my sight, and it drains the battery.

so after i read this, i thought, hmmmm.....

i don't have the reverse interlock mechanism in place, so the lever on the steering column is not connected to anything. sure enough, the lever had moved, and so the key was locked in place. i moved it back down, and removed the key!

this has been going on for about a month or more now

sometimes...
