My dad has been finishing his 72 charger 340 car,

Today when trying to get the engine in, he discovered that with the Trans (727) installed the engine is about 1 1/2" to far forward to hit the k member mounting holes.

It's a 340 car 340 engine 340 motor mounts. What am I missing

Is the transmission mount an original? Is it installed properly?

I'm assuming it's the cars original K-member? Do both motor mounts come up short or just one side?

I first installed motor then installed transmission, realized transmission mount was to far forward and driveshaft was too long. Then I removed motor mounts installed tranny mount drive shaft not fits, linkage for floor shifter now lines up but the front plate of motor mounts are about halfway between bosses on block? I didnt tear this car apart but trying to put back together. Thanks for all your help.

#1. Since you didn't take it appart, are you 100% sure that you have the correct 340 engine mounts?

#2. Are you sure the mounts are on the correct sides of the engine and attached in the correct location (front or rear of the engine bosses, etc. as Joe asked)

#3. The drive shaft will have some slop in it due to the input shaft slip allowance and can be decieving, I'd leave it out until the engine and trans are installed properly

#4. Have another look at the trans mount to be sure it's installed correctly

#5. I'd bolt the trans and engine together, be sure the converter is installed all the way in, bolt it all up, and install it as a unit (even if it's a PIA).

eliminate possibilities first.
bolt correct engine mounts correctly to engine block.
mate trans to engine
install if possible as 1 unit.drop engine unto k-frame with saddle rubber motor mounts(should have locater pin or boss protruding from lower part of mount),engine&trans should pivot up and down at trans to engage trans crossmember to alingment holes in body frame.(with crossmember bolted to trans.
use a long punch or drift to then aling rubber motor mount to k-frame holes, install two long rubber motor mount to k-frame bolts, install 4 long trans crossmember bolts, then your engine7trans is in place, then trial fit driveshaft by inserting splined front slip yolk till it stops, slide rearward to engage u-joint cross to rear axle yolk saddles.

the trans mount is reversable. If you take it out off the cross member , it can be turned around. It does give around an inch difference or more. I have seen done by many installing it in the wrong position, causing the mounting holes to the trans to not line up. Just a suggestion for you to look at. The K menber as well as the trans cross memeber are engineered in from the factory, so it has to be a bracket incorrect issue only.
