We were talking about the purpose of the battery on newer car and trucks at break buddy was saying that the battery has to be big enuff to keep motor running my thoughts were if all is good with the alt. after it starts up the battery is no longer needed its only purpose is to start the motor or provide power when not running for lights and such you should be able to un hook battery (after running) and drive it (least in day time) and as long as battery cables dont touch anything all be good just dont go hooking battery back up while its running am i right or wrong

The point i was making to him was the factory charging sys.(if working as it should) is capable of keeping the motor running and not rely on the battery for power once its started

OK...I've gotta chime in on this one. I personally own a 2007 Ram 1500. I bought it new. Early last year the original battery failed. It happened very suddenly. The truck was running perfectly, we visited a jobsite, got ready to leave and it would not start. Not even a click on the starter. We hooked up jumper cables and got it started. The truck ran down the road about 200 yards. It started acting like the transmission was stuck between gears. It finally quit pulling altogether and the check engine light came on, then the engine died, no start. We checked the battery, it wasn't shorted, just dead. We put a new battery on it and it ran perfectly. That was 20,000 miles ago. Don't ask me why, or what, because I don't know much about them, but that truck has to have a good battery on it or it will not run.
