My chum has a 66 Barracuda with a 273. He wants to swap the factory solid cam for a mild hydraulic. Any issues?

273's were all solid lifter motors. If he wants to do a small hydraulic swap he will need push rods and a set of hydraulic rockers from a 318. I used a 284-484 Mopar Performance cam in one and it ran pretty good.

No issue, he wants a little more performance.

Not the 68 and 69 273s, they were all hydraulic. You can run the adjustable rockers, but the stock pushrods won't be the correct length. The easy thing to do is swap to the non-adjustable rockers and corresponding pushrods.

If performance is the objective, a solid will generally be better. The solid can get the valves open a little faster and farther for any given duration. That means more performance with less trade-off in drivability and economy. How about a bigger solid with matching spings?

He has a NOS 340 hyd cam a parts guy found while doing a clean out at one of the local Dodge dealers, left over from the 70's. If he can swap with the solid is what we need to know...

As said need rockers/pushrods. I have some extras you can have for the shipping (I think I have 16 pushrods) & shafts too. That way you can keep the solid rocker/shaft assys together to keep or sell

Dropping in a 318 would be easier.

You're going to have to change pushrods, but you can keep the cast adjustable rocker arms. Smith Brothers can fix you up with pushrods or you can get them ready-made from Summit or Jeg's.

It is if it isn't you doing it.

To the OP, all you really need to swap in a hydraulic cam is the cam, the hydraulic lifters and a set of new push rods for hydraulic cam to adjustable rockers.

They say there are no such thing as a stupid question.
They say there is always the exception that proves the rule.
Don't be the exception.

The stock 273 cam is super mild, even the 4-barrel cam only had 248 degrees duration. If it's an otherwise stock 273, the factory 340 cam is plenty big and will be a big improvement in performance.

You friend can either swap in 318/340/360 pushrods and non-adjustable rocker arms, or keep his adjustable rockers and just buy some pushrods ready-made for a hydraulic cam and adjustable rockers (which would be my choice).

Other than the pushrod issue, putting a hydraulic cam in an early 273 is no more or less complicated than changing cams in anything else.

Well based on the replies so far, 45 cubes is hard to overcome with a simple cam swap.

I'll put my 273 up against any 318. No way I would ever put a 318 in.

I used a 273 hipo solid cam with .500 lift,that thing rocked.

I have used the 273 hipo solid in a few 318s,all 273 valve gear.

if you are going hydro cam/lifters stick a 318 whiplash cam in it.
