I have a work truck, 2002 Ram 1500 with a problem with climate control. The fan only runs on the high position and nothing else. Compressor is OK, replaced the cond. fan assembly, so would like input on if the problem is in the climate control assembly in the dash or somewhere else. I hate ordering parts and they are not the problem. I have dissassembled the unit, and see nothing apparent that would cause a problem, cleaned and lubed the contact points on the switch, runs only on the high fan speed. Any thoughts on what to do next?

Possibly a blower motor resistor that reduces the current to motor on the lower speeds? At least that is the way manufacurers used to do it.

For sure, this is what they look like for chevy.

They are located in the heater box somewhere.

Don't fret about replacing the blower motor, it needed it anyway because more than likely the old one was starting to draw too much amps and burned out the speed resister and the new one(resister) would have got cooked by the old blower motor sooner than later.

And then you would have thought you got a bad blower resister.

Photobucket is down for a little while so I can't post a picture of what a resister looks like. Will do in a little while.

Even though nothing looks burned up or wrong, it was bad. Same deal blower would only run on high and it is the same exact deal on a ford truck as I recently replaced one of those too.
The blower motor needs to be replaced also to do right, imo.

So this bad resisiter in on the climate control module in the dash or somewhere in the blower / duct box?
My work internet is blocking photobucket pictures. Can't see anything but a red 'X' until I get home this evening.

It'll be in the heater box somewhere, it has to have air blow across it to keep it cool.

Should be on the pass side by the blower motor you will have to lay on the flor and look up at it.The new ones dont look like that pic. They are now all small modules. It will have at least 2 big wires usually black and red. They have power all the time and the computer controls a ground to them.Last one I did at the shop was about 20 bucks shop cost. Its nothing new for them to go bad.Usually the motor is good.GM was famous for them going bad.Typically has 2 small bolts hold it in some have 3.Rocky

Sorry guys, I got sick and am just now recovering. I will try to look for that resistor the next couple of days and hope that is all it is.

I got up under the dash today and the only thing I found was this thing. Looks like a ballast resistor but nothing like what was posted above. It has a burnt look to one corner and a flat wire that looks like it should be connected like a fusible link, the white part is like ceramic. Is this it?????
There were leaves and dirt all packed around it. I got them cleaned out and the fan ran on high to blow trash and gunk out of the mounting hole and all over the floor of the truck. Are we on the right track replacing this little jewel?

Sorry for the crappy pictures, all I have with me is the phone camera.

well, Rockauto says this is the blower motor control resistor, and cheapest is $35.79 + S&H. So I guess this is the next part to replace. I'll try my local Hyandi dealer tomorrow to see what his price is for the part over the counter. Have to go there as they were the Dodge dealer before Obama shut both local dealers down.

It may be ugly, but it sure is slow.
