I just noticed that my water neck seems quite short and lacks the bulge around the top edge? (Yes, after assembling and painting the engine of course)Is this correct or has it been cut? It certainly doesn't look like it has been but every other one I've ever seen has a bulge around the top edge to prevent the hose from coming off.... Engine is a 67 383. See attached pic.

get an iron one (with the lip) & paint it seperately & you're good. Yes it does make you wonder how/why the lip dissappeared off of that one because they all have them

The small cost and effort to replace it is nothing compared to the mess and cost of having your hose blow off leaving you stranded.

Whatever you do, DO NOT replace it with a chrome one. It WILL leak! You have been warned...

I remember buying a new one from the auto parts store that looked just like that one many years ago and questioning it as well .

Really thick base and no sealing bead on the hose end , KEM brand i think it was.

Ive taken the chrome jokers and sanded them on a belt sander, then taped the rest of the shiney off, and bead blasted it because the customer is always right, and I hate leaks. It worked!!

I thought it would probably go this way. I was hoping somebody would come back and say "oh it's fine they're all like that"! Does anybody else have any experience with the NAPA one? Is it cast aluminum? Seems like the chrome one is definitely out based on the comments above and some other posts I found on the subject. Does anybody repop a cast iron version?

The Napa is a cast iron repop, looks/works fine.
The chrome jobber is junk, made of recycled Coors beer cans..
One can sand it, mill it and use super sealer and it will still leak, something to do with the casting when hot changes shape..

Just my $0.02..
