There is a heavy damper/weight on the back of my 74 Satellite's 904.
What exactly is the purpose of this thing? I just never noticed them on many cars. ~Mike~

I'm pretty sure it's there to dampen vibrations and thus noise.

Ok I guess a better question would be...Will it hurt anything if I leave it off? I'm not one to complain of slight noises and thing the general public typically would. ~Mike~

Just dampens vibration. I've only left it on one car I had and, while it did make a difference, it wasn't that noticeable.

On my '73's, there's also one bolted to the floorpan back by where the pinion snubber would hit.

I did an A- B comparison (with, without) on one of my cars with the weight on the trans, didn't notice any significant difference.

Darn.. and here I thought it was to reduce wheel stands

Seriously, as mentioned above... its to dampen harmonic vibrations in the drive train and reduce driver discomfort.

its for easy weight reduction, it also gives you something to throw over the neighbors fence.

my charger also had the one near the pinion snubber area, and on the tailshaft.

If your building a car to cruise on the highway, leave it on. If not, put it on ebay!

Well its a street/strip car and I have to drive on the highway to get to NewEngland Dragway,E-Town,or where ever else the car takes me.
I have no problem removing it if all it will do is decrease smoothness/quietness. I don't want to remove it if it will cause broken tailhousings or other bad things. ~Mike~

I SERIOUSLY doubt simply removing that weight will cause things to break. My engine shakes worse than a dog in heat at certain RPM's (engine issues) and nothing has spit out in over 7 yrs of driving it this way. (engine otherwise runs fine, just don't have the $$$ to rebuild it and get it properly balanced ).

i got tired of taking those things off of trans tailshafts... so if there is one there, it stays. if not, it stays. i bet i have hauled 100 of them to the scrap yard...

I worked at Chrysler Engineering at the time these dampers were added to the cars. There was even dampers inside the steering wheel on some cars, as well as under the dash. The damper on the trans is a Power plant bending damper (PPD). The car will as a rule get a little noiser as not all cars needed them. Some cars just didn't have the problem, but most did. The heavy damper on the floor pan is called a Boom Damper. Of course it stops the floor pan from booming. Take them off if the noise doesn't bother you.

excellent info!!
I think my solid cam and open headers pretty much mask the "boom" factor, but on a street car Id still gas them!

I've notice about this same time (mid 70's) that the Dart SE and Valiant Broughms got a lot of noise reduction stuff.

From your factory experiences what areas needed the most attention for noise reduction ???

I like to make my mopars handle well at the usually adds to ride stiffness and adds to noise, vibration, and harshness (NVH). There are a lot of threads here about adding sound deadner and even frame connectors to reduce NVH

I knew a guy who lived in central Iowa that work for Chrysler in the NVH department.

Interesting Comment, any other tidbits you'd like to share? How excatly did the "power plant bending" whatever gets its name? Was anything really "bending"?

Reality check, that half the population is smarter then 50% of the people and it's a constantly contested fact.

You should see the huge round weight that is hanging off the front end of the 8 1/4 rearend in my Jeep liberty. The thing has got to weight twenty pounds with the bracket. The 8 1/4 has lived forever without the damper in older applications. I guess the people today never heard of good vibrations. They still complain about vibrations in the jeep.
