Hey guys, hope you can help us out.
We recently got in a set of 2.94 OEM ring & pinion set from Mancini and wanted to install it these days. We already noticed there were no given adjustments / settings on the pinion as for the depth etc. so went the trial & error mode to see if we can get the correct pattern.
So far with no luck at all. It gives us no logical idea on how to get it correct. Even seems to be no matching ring & pinion to say at least. The pattern is all over the place, no matter which shims we use.
Maybe we are overlooking something with this OEM set. Any input and/or ideas, tips etc. to get it right in the end?
Thanks a lot guys!

It would help if you mentioned what rear end you have? www.randysringandpinion.com has got a ton of info that you can use. Why don't you start there. If your pattern is way off, don't make shim changes less than .010".

A good starting point for a Dana 60 pinion depth is 3.125
8-3/4 /1.875 tapered pinion is 2.726
and if you are replacing gears in an existing housing and the existing pattern looks good, you will want to start with the existing shim thickness.

Sorry for not being complete as for the info. We had 355 gears but due low tires it gave to many revs so wanted to change to 2.94's. We know the shim thing as in trial & error but how do I explain... Whichever shims we use the pattern 'wobbles' around like if the ring gear is bent or the r&p doesn't match. Hope you catc what I mean

Put a deal indicator on the back of the ring gear in the housing.Check the run out.It would be better to do this with the pinion gear out. Possibly the ring gear didn't seat on the carrier properly or a little dirt. Also the carrier may not have seated properly in the housing.

I have 742 carrier for my '68roadrunner and need to put 3.23s in it. Have any idea on the specs for it?

Factory gears are marked + or - with a number like 0,1, or 2 etc. This is the difference in pinion depth in thousanths of an inch from nominal. In other words a pinion with a +3 on it would need a .003" thicker shim than what the factory pinion depth checking tool would indicate. All basically useless information if you aren't using the factory tools.
Sounds to me like your carrier is warped or you guys used the bolts to pull the ring gear onto the carrier and it's not flush. Factory gears are a little different than aftermarket gears. BTW you still didn't identify what differential this is.

742 carrier I start with an .090" shim and adjust from there.
