I`m having a hood made and my buddy say`s the first one came in at 15 lbs. and told em to make another one and try to get it down to 10-11 lbs. Does this seem doable? Anyone know the weight of their flat no scoop hoods? Thankxxx..........

That`s doable and probably way cheaper than a carbon fiber piece.

i don't know what your skill level is Dom for DIY, but we're a boat building nation down here & we drink a lot of beer. when i want to make something with carbon, i buy a box of cold beers & go to the boat builders on a friday arvo about 3.30pm & trade beer for carbon cloth. i have lots of carbon cloth in my shed so i'm ok for stock. this also works for the catalyst to glue it & the backing cloth for the nice finish. shortly i'm going to make a carbon hood for my e body 'cuda. 3x boxes of beer max will get me all my necessities to make a copy from the mold i already have. the mold cost $120 of our dollars to make(my labour is free).To make a copy from the mold will suck up about 4 hours of my time over 2 days for the rough finish. so if you're skilled & know the contacts, my guess is a hood will owe you less than $100usd if you have the mold & $200 if you got to make one first.(converting our $ into yours) the cost of carbon made parts is all in the labour, & they seem to charge like a Dr or Dentist for their time.

Make sure you have a bunch of zues fasteners to hold it down. It will be like a sheet of cardboard. I gess I have not been keeping up with your weight loss deal.What is your end weight you want the car to be at? Dam thing will just need wings to fly.


If the MODS did their job I would not be hitting the notify MOD button. LOL

I brought mine out of philly for $100, freighted it to cali for $60 and sea freight to Australia was a box of beer, being that the aussie dollar is on par or higher than the USD Im not lookin too bad on costings, since we dont have dusters down here local fiberglass guys quoted like $400 just to make a mould and a further $250 to produce a hood. I agree they charge like a Dr or dentist.

Its just a flat hood & yes its light but yes its flexy so lots of zues clips needed. Im suprized carbon fiber is that much lighter but Im happy with the weight reduction over steel

Thankxxx guys................ I like the "beer for labor" deal and I`ve done plenty of trading but have no desire to tackle a carbon fiber hood...........don`t have the temperment for it. I am using alum. hood pins(five)to hold it down and am hopeing to be at 3000 lbs. when finished.....

if you can glass, then laying carbon is the same. just a different catalyst & you use a backing cloth for a nicer finish.

We have a couple of INDY race teams here in town, as in INDY 500 racing. They make their own molds and carbon fiber parts. Their stuff is nice. Refrigerated materials and ovens to bake the carbon fiber products while in the carbon fiber mold. They tell me, that is the correct way to make a carbon fiber piece, any other way is just half ace. They also told me that I could only use my fiberglass mold 1 time for a C-f piece . The oven would ruin my mold. I have seen plenty of their work and it far exceeds anything of carbon fiber that I have seen doing it the good ole boy way. By the way, I made a 68 Hemi cuda s/s hood that weighed in at 9 pounds , and was rather limber, and that is what the customer wanted.

'Glassing in a few strips of styrofoam will make the hood less of a noodle, and doesn't weigh much if it's done during the layup.
Running a length of aluminum angle attached to the fender edges helps keep the hood level with the fenders, and can double as a Dzus-button mount.
With hood pins, 1 near each corner and 1 at front center has been fine for me up to 130; without the center/front, that area (Duster) would bow upward.
I've always wanted to vent my pin-on hood near the back for aero, but the pain in the butt will be replaced with steel when I restore the car to its original SS/IA livery.

Carbon fiber has to be laid out in layers at different patterns for strength and proper resins used then vacume sealed in bags and the cured in ovens thats alota work, how about a lexan hood the edges can be bent with a brake and possibly heat it for shape????

down under we make racing yachts & they are huge & there's no oven big enough to fit them. when we buy the catalyst we opt for summer or winter brews. if you lay the fibre on a hot summers day with a very fluid mix of catalyst the result is awesum, almost not clean up required for an ultimate finish. smaller items i could see going into an oven in the winter months but then it don't get that cold down here. in winter i just put on 2x tee shirts.

Im sure since you alreay have a hood you could trim it to your required weight and spend any excess cash elsewhere

Some of u are bad azz fab guys and again not my gig but some great ideas and the lexan deal could work w/the right tools which I don`t have so fiberglass it is. Ya, I could probably lighten mine but last time I did that I ruined a perfectly good hood so I`ll take the 10-15 lb. ligher mold on and run with it.

have you already made the hood? or do you have a mold to make one from?
there's different grades of glass fiber, the fine weave might be advantageous since you don't need as many layers, especially if you mold in some stiffening ribs

He`ll sell the first one cos I`m not obligated to it and he runs the show........just weighted my hood on a digital scale and it`s 31 lbs. where my dial scale said 23-25 lbs. My lightweight glass windshield weighs 22 lbs and lexan MAY be 8-9 lbs...........gettin there baby.
