Plenty of great info already in the tech archive/best of Moparts. Huge detailed database.

Set enough $$$ aside for good heads that will flow at least 270 by .550 lift, the more the better, otherwise the motor won't want to pull in the upper ranges.

Don't overcam or run too loose a converter unless your combo is very light. Strokers love single plane intakes and big cfm carbs when you build them at or above the 10.75:1 range.

Lots more will chime in , just want to get the thread rolling

A high quality oil pan is a must--Charlies comes to mind--the deeper the better as the 408's can and do act like a blender with crank case oil--run as little oil as possible ( I just don't think you need 7 qts) run six or less.
Some can hit a standard dipstick, be sure and check that during build.
Vent valve covers well and keep breathers near the front for sure.
A good one feels like a big block, you are going to have some fun! I agree with Wise, they likey some good heads--do not skimp on rocker arms--get some good ones.

I ran a 10.5 to 1 408 in 3150lb duster. With mild ported eddies and 248/577 roller 3k stall and 4.10s ran 11.20s@118. Put on indybrocks, and ran 2 passes only went 11.09@122 with bad 1.65 60ft.
No oiling mods, but 7qt pan. Ran it to 6800 rpm all the time. Also carb I ran was proform 950. Intake was an m1 then a victor.
You will be surprises how well it will probably run.

Very good advice, one magazine writer also comes to mind when you say this.

Measure everything twice amd take good notes as you go. Also I don't think it'll need 4.56 gears. My street/strip Dart is 3260# with me in it, 408, 10.9-1 with a flat solid cam and ported edlebrocks runs high 6.50 in good air and high 6.60s in street trim in the heat with 4.10 gears and a 28" tall radial.

Justin,

What converter are you running with your combo?

Its a Edge Racing 9.5" that flashes 5000. I've been 1.38 60' but usually goes 1.40-1 on radials.

You mentioned forged pistons, but what about the crank? A friend of mine bought a so-called forged stroker kit which meant forged pistons but he got the cast Eagle crank, and the I-beam rods. If they sell the kit with forged crank they call it the "racing"-kit. He had to buy a 4340 steel crank as the first thing to do....2. was a set of good H-beam rods. Supplier took the infamous cast crank in exchange. I would say cast Eagle crank for Mopar is don't. Cast Scat/MP crank OK. Forged Eagle crank OK (enough). Check this before going further.... My

I wouldn't take an eagle crank for a mopar period. Especially not a cast crank. The H-beam rods are good though. Not afraid of the Scat I beam rods either.

Friend with a Dakota broke one inside a few miles right at the number 7/8 journal. Eagle told him his transmission broke it shifting to hard!

I kid you not... He is still pissed off, they refused to make good on it.

Yeah, mine broke between #1 rod and main. They told me detonation did it. After getting the supervisors involved, they sent me a new crankshaft. I gave it away.
