In changing the left handed wheel studs on my 70 bell I find I can't get a stud that will pull up correctly on the front. I have the 10" drums. The part numbers I find call for a 1/2x20 .625 or 5/8 spline. Dorman #610-039.1 is the part number I found but the spline area is to small. I sorted through the parts ben and found a 1/2x20 .640 spline, it was close, I thought it was going to work but it spun when I tightened the lug nut with ease. Can anyone help me out with finding the correct right hand tread parts?

Thanks, not sure what I'm looking for. That's where the problem is.

Do you think its possible that during production they may of run low on the correct .625" diam it calls for with 10" drums and substituted a .650" diam that they call for on 11" drums to keep production rolling?

When you pulled the old studs out, did you cut off the swedge ? If not it might have enlarged the holes as you pressed them out.

What was protruding out from the hub was substantially smaller then the spline so there was nothing pressed back through that would enlarge the openings. I did front and rear the same and the rear works fine. I went up in size from .625"-.640" and still to small.

Outside is new and old rear, center is old front. No "swedge" of any sorts to cut/remove. Any other ideas?

In the photo, it looks like the splines are not in the same location; maybe insufficient engagement?
Is it possible that the LH studs have been replaced before and the splines are worn/enlarged?
I'd spend some time with the wheel stud catalog at the local NAPA.

Thanks, the one in the middle is the problem stud. The spline runs the length of the shank. The new one was a good fit in the rear.

From the looks of it the center stud in the pic was swedged in.
It's fatter at the top just below the threaded area.
You can see where the splines in the drum were cut into it when it was forced out.

The holes in the drum are now larger than what the factory studs require. They're never gonna fit tight using the stock studs.

It's gonna take a stud with a larger splined area.
You need to go to a real auto parts store (NAPA, etc) where someone that actually knows about cars (and parts) can help you find a stud that will fit.

I'd say try the Dorman 610-122 in the hub/drum.
If I'm reading it right it's .025 larger in diameter in the knurld area.
Anything short of you measuring the hole diameter is just a guess.

Take a hammer and dolly and flatten the holes again, Take a ball peen and go around the outside of the hole, they will press in again. The left stud you have pictured is the rear axle, the middle one that is bent was swedged in the front hub, thats why you had to beat the crap out of it. Back in the day they had a little cutter that would take off that ridge flush with the hub, and then it would come out. I guess that practice went away with the left hand threads, although some vehicles still use em.

No no no, NO WAY. After ordering the .650" wheel studs I found my issue before pulling the first one into place. BUDD hubs and drums. I got this now.
