hi i have a chance to get a new r block and was thinking how much more it would cost me to build over a stock 360 block. i have COMP Cams Endure-X Roller Lifters 828-16 can i use them ???? what are cam costs, what are machine shop costs ??what would i have to do to my w5s to put them on the block and cost???? thanks guys mopar or no car !!!!

You won't be able to use the lifters as the tie bars are different.
Machining costs will be the same as your factory block.

You will need to check out what size tunnel it has as some blocks had the 1.998" journal tunnel. Otherwise they will run a 50mm or 60mm camshaft.

The pushrod holes will need to be machined on your W5 heads.

In the long run, it will be worth the extra effort

If it a blank block lifter bores,cam bore, on and on your looking at min $4000.00 on machine work. I had mine done at LSM on of the few that does lifter bores on R3 nothing from your old 340 will work

cam is 1.998 journal if thats stock ???? thev guy told me is uses stock cam bearing. what lifters will i need ?????? what will a cam cost me ???

Has this block been run yet... if its new you need
to get it line honed ... the new blocks cant be run
without honing

W5 heads and 48* is gonna cost ya. W5s are really a 18* and are usually on 59* or stock block. Look at sdss website he has prices that are a little more $ now a few yrs later.

The 1.998" is the size of one journal on a standard camshaft. The 1.998" journal camshafts are difficult to come by, the cheapest option would be the 50mm roller tunnel version.

Is this block a tall deck or a short deck? Is it 318/340 main or Ford main? To my knowledge, there isn't a 360 main R3 available. There isn't a 48* block available that runs the standard cam bearings or camshaft. The lifter bore spacing is different, along with the lobe phasing for the 48* lifter bores.

You would have to call a couple of cam companies to see what the current price and availability is on a 50mm or 60mm camshaft is these days. They are available 2nd hand also if you know where to look. The 60mm door stop I have was around $6-700 from Comp Cams.

Get some more details on this block, so you know what you're getting before you hand your cash over. Do you have any pictures?

Have you got the Part Number for the block?

With that we could help more.

It also helps to know when it was NEW. Some of the more recent R3 blocks have gone to a more generic set-up when delivered.

BUT count on at a Minimum
1.Line Bore cam Tunnel (50mm-60mm Bearings are about $90-120/set)
2.Line Bore mains
3.Bore and install Lifter Bushings
4.Bore & Hone Cylinders
5.May have to drill for oil filter if you want an oil filter on the block. some come with a Blank Non-Drilled oil filter area.
6.May have to Deck the surface to true it up.
7. Lifters are from Comp Cams and Morrel usually about $600-750/set
8. Cams, you'd be best spending the money and getting Bullet or LSM to cut you a billet one.
9. Tube the lifter valley to force oil drain to the back?

Far as the W5's??? Not that familiar with them.

If its an "R" block ie no numbers after the R then it will use a cam with 48 degree lobe spacings with std LA sized stepped journals. Cams blanks are hard to find and best bet with a new block is to have cam tunnel opened up to suit 50mm. If its cheap and is tall deck 4 bolt with 340 main it will be no different really when done than a new R3.

The cam bearing bores for the babbit bearings are all the same , not stepped like a stock block........on the 48 degree blocks.

59 degree R blocks should have stepped bearings like a production block and use standard bearings.
That being said , I understand that " standard " doesn't necessarily apply to R-3 blocks and there are a lot of variations that you need to look for.
If it requires babbit bearings , the oil filter boss and rear main cap should be machined.
If you notice the drill mis alignment at the bottom of the hole for the oil filter , be VERY careful if you decide to clean it up with a die grinder.......or be prepared to use a remote filter and do some drilling , tapping and plugging at the filter boss. DAHIK.
And if you plan on a wet sump , give some thought to oil drainback and be prepared to put the ideas you come up with to work.

I did not have to bush the lifter bores , but my block was not drilled to feed the lifters.
I used the drill fixture sold by MoPar to drill into the oil galleys , but their recommendation of a 3/16th hole struck me as way too much.
I used the drill fixture as a pilot for a #2 starter drill and once I had the holes located , used a 3/32nd drill to finish. ( .09375 )
That is probably still too large , but was the smallest drill bit I was comfortable using with a hand held drill.

That is a nice fixture. But, not all lifters and cam base circle need the oil hole in the same place. I would not want the oil feed hole to be any larger than .028". These blocks are notorious for over oiling the top end. I have replaced lifters with another brand and had to cut a gateway from where the oil feed was and the EDM hole on the lifter. A lot of intake lifters have the EDM hole offset.

With my past experiences on these engines I would not run a comp lifter period. Morrel and Crower both prooved to be excellent choices.

My 48 degree "R" block used std la cam bearings and sounds like the OP does too?
