I'm a cheapskate and can't recall ever attempting such a thing. If you do get it apart, I would wonder where you would obtain the bearings-seals etc.

Never have so I'm just thinking out loud. I think pressing the shaft out would be the easy part & more difficult would be finding/adapting a puller to pull the vanes off of the shaft (which you'd want to do first) without damaging the vanes

if a kit for yours is anything like this one, a new (non-rebuilt) part may be the better option.

You have to be both a cheapskate AND a glutton for punishment to try this one - particularly since the net savings would be about $5 by the time you were done !!

Thank you all for your input. Sounds like a no go. Can anyone recommend a shop that will rebuild my pump?

I don't think a water pump can be rebuilt. I tried it once and didn't have any success. The shaft busted the housing when I tried to press it out.

Contact your local auto parts store, NAPA would be your best bet probally, and ask them if they can have yours rebuilt instead of just exchanging it I know there are, at least there use to be, commercial large volume rebuilders that would do that for a few dollars more than the standard over the counter rebuilt pumps, they where charging the extra for tracking that core internally and returning it back to that dealer

I know of a guy that comes out to Spring Fling and has original core rebuilt through a local auto parts store. I think he sells on Ebay too.

If you find a place that will rebuild your core, engrave your name or something on it and show the person receiving the part.

If you read the whole ebay listing, he indicated that his rebuilder will install the pump kit.

Sometimes one really has to wonder about folks. Never have I heard of such a "backasswards" way of doing something. Why the cost alone one could get at least 3 impellers for the price of the re-build. Just don't get it? Then again maybe I'm not supposed to...

Actually never rebuilt one for a BB mopar but I did have to rebuild one for a Turbo charged Perkins Diesel engine. Kit was very expensive but I put it back in and logged 2200hrs more with no problems. I am sure it could be done but not cost effective. I had to do mine cause the replacement was in Germany and was a couple hundred dollars plus shipping and it broke on a friday. It was on a Grape harvestor and I needed to finish harvesting before a hurricane and luckily found the kit about 50 miles away at a parts depot....

I am aware I can go down to my local auto parts store and buy a rebuilt water pump for $45.00. However my cars ( which I am the original owner for 40 plus years) still have their original water pumps. I am trying to keep the cars all original and the rebuilt pumps are not the same shape nor do they have the Chrysler casting number in them. I can have my alternator, power steering pump etc. rebuilt, why not the water pump. I just need to find someone who rebuilds water pumps preferably located in southern california. Thank you for any help.

sbcjd you certainly ain't getting much love on this request. I'm on your side & (some) people here do tend to get a bit owly especially on the weekends. Yeah if you can locate the seal assy I think you'd be well on your way or as said mark it on the inside where it dont show & find a rebuilder.

The rebuilt parts store water pumps do not look at all like the original cast iron water pumps and do not have the same casting and date marks.

This is really a resto topic.

I'm sorry that people are too ignorant to understand someone else's perspective or opinions that do not match thier own.
