I put out a want ad for a 440 and a guy responded that he has one in a 70 or 71 3/4 ton truck. he wants $250, but I just had a brain fart and remembered that they didn't come with 440's till 72. Am I right?

Been many years for someone to swap one in. Have him read the block numbers to you.

Yep, largest stock engine would be a 383 2-bbl, but the 440 could have been swapped in.

That's the best bet. I've had many folks tell me about their "440" in their trucks only to find 400s and 383s when I checked them out...

If it is a 440 then the info will be on the pad in front of the intake on the drivers side.

I agree, the 440 is one of the most common swaps into a 61-71 Dodge truck. It is definitely the most common swap for an engine that wasn't available in 61-71 trucks, the Cummins being second.

383 and 400 were options. In earlier years the 426 wedge was an option (IIRC). And I've been told that in the last year of the Swepty a 440 was an option but I don't think anyone has ever seen a factory 440 '71 Swepty.

I bought my '68 Swepty with a 440 in it but the 440 and matching trans was from a c-body.

The biggest problem are the engine mounts. The same isolator was used for a /6. It was never meant to hold a 440. I'm working on installing a set of locking mounts and a torque strap. I've now replaced 1 too many radiators.

I just want the engine nothing from the truck. Although he said I could have it all for the same price. Just don't have the room.

You could probably get $250 for scrap value on the rest of the truck......Total cost of 440...$0.00

I would scrap the engine and keep the truck!

The 400 wasn't an option in 70-71. The 383 was the only big block available in the light duty trucks. The 426 was a special option in 64,65 and 66. It was part of the High Performance Package.

If you get the whole truck, post some pictures. You might be able to make some money on some of the hard to find parts, provided anything is savable.

check it out....i have seen early trucks with E& F440HP2 engines in them....seems those old 383 2bbls give up after 125K or so or they run them out of oil and spin bearings, dropping a 440 that you had pulled from a wrecked 69 or 70 Charger R/T .... yep seen it done
