In the end am looking for something that is set up for long life, durability, fuel economy over lots of horsepower.
It seems like a 383 would be perfect for you,if you are happy with the 383's performance. Sure a 440 or a 440 stroker will have more power, but the larger displacement will use more fuel. If you like the 383, keep it!
If you aren't going to abuse it, race it, or otherwise damage it, keeping the numbers matching engine in the car makes sense.

Get a stroker off a 400 block, that way you can reuse your intake and headers and stuff.

With Stu's garage bar, I think a "cosmetic restoration" on the numbers motor, would make for a cool addition -- a freshly cleaned and painted and dressed motor sitting on a stand in the corner of the bar area would look pretty cool.

Stu, When I lived in the bay area in the mid 70s I raced roundy round in Vallejo and Petaluma. One of my sponsors was Jim, the owner of the machine shop at the NAPA in Petaluma Last I heard he was still there. The motors he built for us were great. We had 0 problems with them at all. Id give him a call to see if he is still there. I had a good friend in Antiock that built engines for a living. Id highly reccomend him if he was still alive. Is Vic Hubburd still in Hayward? There was also a good shop in Walnut Creek that used to build some bad azz engines..

These guys need to get off the stroker kick. he has no need for a stroker.
Let's see...
Fuel economy over hosepower.
Where does stroker fit into that statement?
Stick with a mild cammed 383 with 9.5:1 compression for the savings at the pump. It will make plenty of power and still return good mileage. He needs torque at low to mid rpm and the 383 will do it without needing a long arm crank.
