I would really love to have a Passon 5-speed but I already installed a Richmond 5-speed before his ever came out. A Richmond is a great transmission if you don't mind cutting your floor and torsion bar crossmember it took me a weekend to cut and fab the crossmember,cut and box my torsion bar crossmember,and make a custom trans tunnel Buy the Passon unit and just bolt it in much easier and I believe a better transmission than the Richmond IMHO Just talking from first hand experience here Gus

Hp power levels? intended use of the car? big block or small block? If you're building a mild small block, the truck NV3500 may be a cheap option for you. you can pick one up for a couple hundred bucks out of the junk yard and bolts right up to the small block engines. I was pushing an estimated 350hp/400 ft lbs of torque through mine and it was ok for the 4,000 miles I put on it. (My truck dyno'd at 285 hp and 325 tq at the wheels) that said, they ARE only rated for 350 ft lbs by the factory, and I'm in the middle of swapping in a viper T56 transmission so I can do more with my motor down the line and not worry about gernading the trans. the NV3500 kinda bulky though, not sure it'll bolt in without mods to the sheet metal. but it is CHEAP! (you can even buy a remanufactured one for about $1,000 without a core) There's a Toyota trans I believe designated R154? that some guys have used. apparently if you take the AX-15 bell housing off a V6 Dakota truck it'll bolt to R154 and the 3.9 V6s use the same small block bell pattern as every other small block. If you're making serious power and want a TKO-600, I know a guy that can set you up with a full kit for less than $5,000 and doesn't use a single Keisler part. AND, it uses an SFI certified blowproof bell

So you just want a "5-speed" or would you consider one of Jamie's OD gear sets for a 4-speed case I have done a few of these conversions and they are very nice Here is the thread about the 5-speed https://board.moparts.org/ubbthreads/show...e=0#Post6330693As for Jamie's 5 speed I think it's worth the money for ease of use and superior engineering If I need a release bearing or a pilot bearing I don't have to order one special from Passon(although thats who I deal with anyway)I can get one from many other sources. Plus since you don't want to cut or modify your floor, that pretty much kills all of your 5 speed options, other than Jamie's unit, because my understanding of it is that he got it all to fit inside a standard 4-spd box.
with a big block and not wanting to do any metal modification, then your 5-spd options are going to be extremely limited.
The gear vendors are nice from what I hear, I've never used one myself...but they are also not cheap, and their OD is only a .78:1
What's the OD ratio in the passion unit? the TKO has a .82 or a .64OD. that .64 allowed me to turn only 2400 rpm on the highway with 29" tires, and 4.56 gears in the axle.
for reference, my current truck had an NV3500, with a .73 OD and with 26.7" tires, 3.92 gears, I was turning nearly 3,000 rpm at 70mph

if your 383 is fairly mild with a wide torque curve, your best options will probably be to try find an iron case A833OD---
gear ratios are:
3.09/1.67/1/.73 and work nice for highway gearing with 3.23-3.55 gears and 26-28" tall tires.
