Scenerio: 2010 Avenger 2.4L, 50K miles, never an issue prior. Going to leave for work, went to start car, it started, stumbled, then stalled rather quickly. Went to try and start again, just cranking. The sound is not normal, like engine just spinning, not trying to start or fire. In the past I had a Neon that broke a cam shaft, reminds me of that sound. Not wanting to be late for work, just jumped in truck. I thought I would check for compression in event of broken timing belt or cam. Next would be check for fuel prssure. A friend mentioned crank sensor. Is there some sort of check for crank or cam sensors? Any other suggestions what to look for or ideas of what could have happened? Also, my old Neon was a 2.0L, which was an interference engine. Is the 2.4L an interefernce engine as well? I know if belt breaks, valves bends in an interference design. Any and all replies will be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Kevin

Sounds like a broken belt.
Your ok if it broke as its a non interferace engine.
Good luck

I have an issue with a no start on my 2010 Avenger 2.4L. Went over on an Avenger forum, browsing posts for no start. Read a post that the 2.4L engine has a timing chain, not a belt. Can anyone verify this?

if its a chain or a belt, things can happen in the timming system.. by the way it sounds like the engine has 0 compression.. get it home and verify

Sorry, I missed the year you have. 2006 and older have belts. 07 and newer have chains.

2.4L is designated a "World engine." It has a timing chain and is an interference engine. Start with the basics, good luck.

use some starting fluid to make sure that it is a spark problem. check crank sensor ground wire. my PT Cruser half shaft wore thru my crank sensor ground wire. no sensor, no spark.

Thanks for tips. Luckily the car is home and doesn't need a tow. Weather & work prevented me from taking a look at it yesterday. For sure I will start with the basics as mentioned, fuel, spark, compression.
