Was able to save the center brace. I used a 1/8 inch drill bit and drilled a pilot hole in the center of all of the spot welds. Then a 1/2 inch rotabroach sheetmetal hole cutter and attempted to just go though the upper skin. When using the rotabroach cutter, the chips were clean and then you can feel the cutter when it goes through and starts to touch the frame rail. You will sometimes see a puff of dirt or rust powder when it breaks though. The cutter will last longer if you spray a little wd40 or cutting oil on the cutter every other hole or so. The pilot hole will be welded up later when you replace the pan. I hope this helps anyone thinking about this project.

I dont think so. I will get a chance to try later tonight. I thought it would fit with the quarter off but the wheelhouse is in the way. May need to cut it in half and butt weld it after all.

From experience, don't cut the one piece floor pan. Carefully drill the spot welds on the tail panel and remove it. The trunk floor will slide right in that way. You can re use your original tail panel or replace it with new. I'm still doing a 70 Charger the same way. New quarters, wheel houses, trunk floor and extensions, tail panel and rear valance. I counted the spot welds in the trunk floor once...almost 400 but the AMD panel fit very well.

Thanks for the info-I just ordered a set from the same link! I did it the hard way 2 years ago with my 70 Barracuda. I spent HOURS and HOURS grinding through each weld...never again thanks to you! Dod you have an estimate of how long it took you to cut all the trunk floor welds and remove the trunk pan?

Looking good. I am just beginning the tear down of my 68 Road Runner. The driver's side was hit hard and repaired with a sledge hammer and a couple of gallons of bondo. I have had to remove the inner structure and door jamb. I am onto the trunk in the next few weeks.

when its metal your not gonna use i tend to take the air chisel to the spot welds...you wont did into the rail...saves a ton of time over drilling the welds. if you plan on reusing a panel a 1/2 roto is humongas and your just filling and filling for reuse i like 3/8 but fresh metal ill drill a 1/4 in hole to plug weld. i need to get back on my 68, your cars alot more solid than mine however, i woulda loved to get away with cheater skins.

Awesome work ! Just out of curiousity .....Does anyone know if you can split the full trunk floor right over where the frame rail is and have it still fit through the trunk opening ? It would save having to "finish" the bottom of the trunk floor as the frame rail would hide it

Gas tank hides most of the center splice so who the heck will ever see it.

I did that with mine and it worked great. The only caveat is it's on a '68 convertible. The trunk floor is the same but I believe the trunk hinge mounts are in a slightly different location.

Man...I need a bigger freakin' garage.

Supposedly a Volvo sun roof is close to a factory sunroof. If it were mine I would just patch the hole.
