sounds like a chaffed (sp?) wire in that circuit.... which very well could be the reason he bypassed it.... follow it up to the power source and I'd bet you will find a short

Guess I spoke too soon............go out to start my car today and no ignition check fuse box and blown fuse..........20+ fuses later and trying every wiring combo my friend and I can think of and still can`t figure it out. Turn key to crank position and fuse blows....I wired it right and now it`s all wrong. There was a problem w/the ign. when I got the car years ago and that explains why he bypassed the ign. switch and ran a remote switch w/activates the msd box THEN you hit the key to start it.........5-days later I`m beat and over this pos for a bit. How would one go about wiring up the ign. switch when many of the wires are gone and why the hell did it run yesturday and not today? Totally baffeling and I guess I realy have to earn this one............later.

You need to make sure that the "start" and "run" circuits are tied together, but not supplying the MSD with 12V at the same time. When you turn the key to "on" you should be supplying 12V for the "run" circuit. When you turn the key to "start" the ignition gets 12V from a different source while cranking. If you bypassed the key and have power to the MSD all of the time and you turn the key to "start" it will short out and blow a fuse. Sorry I missed you yesterday, got called out to work...

I am sure this is minor and it sounds like you are doing a good job by not letting it get the best of you.

Wiring has always been one of my weaker points and hopefully my college classes will hone in these highly needed skills. I would of been at this one maybe two days if the wiring was un butchered but that`s not the case and now I have two customers cars to work on so I`ll get to it when I can..........thankxxx. Jeramiah, I`ll take what you posted and see what I can find but again, ran the night before and blows fuses the next day............

Dom, I feel your pain with the wiring. I think everyone that owned my car over the years, including myself, Cut at least a couple wires. The ones that weren't cut were brittle. I decided to bite the bullit and rewire the car with a Kwik Wire kit (kind of like a painless). I suck at wiring but now that it's done it looks neater and everything works like it's supposed to. I also had a match and gas can on stand-by.....

my buddy who is one of the smartest guys i know and has a mopar PHD had a duster that wouldent start and would blow fuses and burn up ignition boxes.i loaned him a full milk crate of old ignition control modules from my parts pile.he called the next day and said all of the boxes were bad!i told him i pulled alot of them from running cars so there was no way they were all bad.he had the battery hooked up backwards

I figured a .44 mag would be more fun than watching it burn and believe me, the thaught crossed my mind but since I can`t own a gun yet that fantasy was a wash.......... I took care of my customers today and I`ll be back at it later tonight just waitin on Jeramiah to call me back so we/he can figure it out...........oh, my batterie`s hooked up properly.

Well, it`s running again and after going through all of my new wirng AGAIN, checking the ign. wires which were suspect the only thing that makes sense is the fuse box. All I did was tie wrap all of my work up nicely but now I`m thinking that when I got to the fuse box and tucked it up tightly, that the wires on the back of the box must of been touching each other or something else to short em out. Jeramiah was kind enuff to walk me through the stock wiring diagrams he had over the phone and even grabbed one of his steering colums to verify the ign. circuits and to make sure I wired it correctly and I did. Now I have to find the cut wres to my back inside running lights and HOPEFULLY we`re good to go.............Thankxxx again..........

I am glad to hear that things are still operating as you would expect them to. It can be really frustrating to work on a car that has been "repaired" in the past by another "mechanic". Glad to be able to help out!

Thankxxx for all of your help.........I was gettin ready to respond back a few days ago but my computer froze and is being repaired as we speak. Drove the dart yesturday and all`s well so far but I still need to get the rear inside lights working and fatten it up on the top end since it`s around 12.8 at 6500rpms and Bakersfield`s quite a bit lower generally then my town is. Thankxxx again.......
