I have a 5-spd. Never get out of 4th in the 1/4 mile. Buddy had a Dakota with a 6-spd T-56. Again, never get past 4th
I don't think you want to be using an OD in a drag race. Even the 4 and 5 spd autos never get past the 1:1 gear

I'd have to do the math again, but I think 6000 rpm in 4th gear is well over 100 mph (I want to say close to 115-120) in my truck. 3.92 gears, 27-28" tires.
Even I my old big block truck with a TKO and 4.56 gears, never got past 4th, and I was trapping at 107

Now are you talking 4 speed overdrive or a true 5 speed like a Richmond or Doug Nash If you have a heavy car or narrow torque curve go with a 5-speed. Now if you have enough stones that the gear changes don't drag the engine down too much go with a 4 speed. I like my 5-speed because the engine stays up in the happy range all the way down the track Gus

I run a Liberty prepped 833 in my Cuda. I really wish I could upgrade to a 5 speed. Even in a 9 second run, it seems like it takes forever for the engine to wind up for the next gear change. I like the 2.65 first gear, but I would like a little higher 2nd, a little lower 3rd, and one more in between.

In my 2010 Challenger I never got out of 4th. 3.73 gear. I would think a 4 speed would be plenty.

Again, some of you guys are taking the question out of context. There's a big difference between a street type 5-speed where 4th = 1:1 and 5th = O.D., and a racing trans like a Liberty, Jerico, Nash, ETC that has a 1:1 5th gear and closer ratios in the 1-4 range

Right. I ASSuMEd the original poster was asking about "833 vs TKO" type transmissions, i.e. a 4-spd with 1:1 as final or a TKO with .64:1 as the final gear.
Didn't realize he was asking about a racing 5-spd that was close ratio with a final gear of 1:1
Question though, if your motor has a flat torque curve from 3000-6000 rpm, do you really need a close ratio gearbox? or would fewer gears, with less time spent "shifting" be better? or do you still see a benefit of running 5500-6000 rpm the whole pass vs 4500-6000?
