I was checking on the price for a rollcage and a 10 point moly cage installed by a professional is going to run 2250. i have never had a cage put in but price seems kinda steep. also is it worth the extra cost vs. mild steel. it is going in a roadrunner.

Yes it worth it if you want a light car... if he is
suppling the moly tubing and bending it that is not
far off.... have you tried buying moly tubing.. that
stuff is crazy on price

That's a good deal if it's 8.50 cert. Normally closer to $3k. S/F....Ken M

Yes he said it will certify to 8.50 plus he always adds two extra bars in with it. I want the car to be light as possible but was thinking maybe mild steel and spend the extra money elsewhere.

just curious if you priced the three different materials. EWS, DOM and moly. seems to me the DOM isn't exactly inexpensive and imho i wouldn't invest the labor installing EWS tubing. a lot of people will mig mild steel but personally i think everything should be tigged

I always look at the mild steel bar work in cars and wonder why they didn't TIG weld it. MIG welds look like crap IMO, I've spent the extra $$$ and bought 4130 tubing for my car. It will help with re-sale later on.

Nothing structually wrong with MIG and DOM, it's just that a lot of people doing things poorly do it that way. All the roundy round stuff is MIG/DOM; as is most road race stuff. TIG has a higher cost of entry and requires more skill, and everybody knows it. So the entry level guys go MIG and get in over their head.

IMO, a lot of the issues with MIG are guys trying to be cheap with 115v units and lack of practice/experience. S/F...Ken M

Price seems fair to me. Go moly from the start and you won't kick yourself later. You can always spend the coin somewhere else later....you can't easily install a new cage.

That is a bargain for a moly cage installed.
I'd be green lighting that project a.s.a.p. before he changes his mind or the price of materials goes up again.

Seems like a fair price to me. My 25.5 was alot cheaper than that but that was with myself & some buddies doing it ourselves & I bought/supplied the tubing.
Don't know the weight difference overall. But I remember when one of my buddies went from a mild steel 10 point cage to a moly 25.5 cage his car was still almost 50 lbs lighter with the new cage & more bars.

My brother was quoted over $2000 just to complete the front section of his car (road runner). I thought that was high. I would think a full cage for $2500 would be a good price.
Good luck

Size for size the weight difference between ERW, DOM, and moly is negligible. The weight difference is due to the difference in strength - you can use smaller and thinner wall tubing with Moly verses the other two and still have the same strength rating. With a 10 - 12 point cage, the weight difference would probably be in the 30 lb range. Obviously, the more tubing you use, the greater the weight savings would be - if you went with Moly. Strength ( by itself ) isn't really an issue ether. You have to meet the sanctioning bodies spec, no matter what you use. I'm not advocating one over the other. When I built my cage, I went with DOM. I mig'ed it. Dispite what others my say, IMO, Strength and quality of the work is mostly due to the person doing the work, not the type of welder or tubing used. Since I am the driver, I had a vested interest in doing it right. I also went in to my project with plenty of welding experience ( both mig and tig ).

just curious if that cage has been certified. unless i misunderstand the rulebook (distinct possibility) the hoop crossbar is not supposed to be above the door sidebar

" not above the drivers shoulders OR side bar". I took that to mean if it is not above the drivers shoulders, being above the cross bar was ok. My cage went in a mid 11 second car that will end up being a mid 10 second car ( if I'm lucky ). The car will never see 9 seconds. The cage is not certified, and never will be.
